Hammock Help. DD or not DD?
« on: July 25, 2011 »

So me and oisin are buying ourselves hammocks either tonight or tomorrow ;) for the weekend. But was just wondering what brands do you know of other than the dd and Hennessy. Hennessy for ourselves is a little over priced and dd is just on the verge. We'd like mozzi nets for all the midges. And I dont like the idea of being cocooned, so mozzi net is the best idea.

Please note the smart use of Oisin's wording in the subject title. Sounds like Shakespeare doesnt it? :)

I have a DD but have never used any other version. It's a pretty awesome hammock, their tarps are top notch too!

I got mine in decathlon for £15 and it seems good but i've yet to sleep in it, there was a thread on hammocks recently.

ive got both the hennessey expidition and a couple of the dd ones .

definatly would go for the new dd type one that you can slip a thermarest into between the skins(double skinned obviously)

the hennessey is a quality hammock without a doubt but i wouldnt say its seventy or eighty quids worth better than the dd.

also , make sure to get the dd lightweight tarp. i use mine for all sorts of stuff, last night it was a nice blanket/groundsheet on the shores of strangford for the baby to roll about on.

i picked up a little travel hammock from trekmate while i was in TK max, they also do mossie nets occasionally too.

bear in mind though they dont ALWAYS stock them , id try the place in boucher retail park too.

of course you could always make your own if you have access to a sewing machine. ive made quite a few of my own and the beauty is that you can make them whatever size you like.

you should be able to knock one up for about 15 quid.

I've been using the trekmates hammock, really pleased with it, bit of fraying the first time out but since then it's been great, ropes that came with it are good quality, stuff sac is just the right size and since I popped a carrymat inside the special pocket it's been very toasty. Picked up a remnant bit of netting which I hang from my ridgleine to keep the wee beasties at bay. For £20 (£24 with netting) shes's a bargain!

I would "urge the splurge" and recommend you shell out for a DD hammock and tarp.

DD Tarp 3m x 3m c. £35
DD Frontline 2012 Hammock c. £45

You can upgrade your suspension systems, and there is loads of advice on here how to do that - (Thanks Bo0galoo!), but it's not essential.

I almost exlcusively use the tarp for camping - unless with the missus.
