Fuel change for Trangia

CALLING ALL BACK-PACKERS (anybody,really)

I'm a back-packer who does long term wild camping and have used METHS for my Trangia for the last 20 yrs. Thinking of "gassing" it up. At the moment I carry 2 and 1/2 Ltrs which will normally lasts me 2wks; cooking time per day ----about 1hr. I don't want speed (although this is something I will have to endure !) but trying to reduce wt. & vol.

I cook from inside the sleeping bag in the apron of the tent-----breakfast in bed !!!!

I would like to hear from anybody who has converted and are still alive to tell the tale !!! Considerations ----minus temps ?  Propane vs Butane ?( Even meths requires "warming" at low temps before it will ignite -usually carry a candle). Seem to remember, in the distant past, a blue gas canister inside the sleeping bag on very frosty nights. (Could have been for a different reason entirely -mid 70's !!!!!)  Thanks, Vinny

I've only really ever cooked with Meths so I don't have anything to add regarding a move to gas.

I would be fascinated, as I'm sure others would also to hear something about any big epic trips you have been on.  Have you any links to any previous blog or forum entries that could give a wee flavour?

Those do sound like epic trips, I'd be interested in hearing more.

I have a couple of standard meths Trangias but no gas conversion. I do however have several gas stoves and generally gas is much better. Lighter over a longer trip (as I understand, I've done no long trips), easier to control/simmer and much faster. You'd lose that lovely meths smell though and have to put up with the roar of the flame ruining your tranquility though :)

from a previous thread.

I was looking at Cotswold website and see that the Trangia gas converter is priced at £50.

I have a Trangia and recently bought an MSR Pocket Rocket gas burner.  I was experimenting and the MSR Pocket Rocket fits quite neatly into the Trangia.  The MSR cost £30.

It may give you another option, save a few quid and have two seperate types of stove with a third combined.  See attached link to photos.

Frying. 6-8 rashers of bacon and 2 wheaten pitta bread is my standard breakfast. ( I remove the fat and make pork scratchings for the birds) Yes I think I will stick to meths or I wil not be able to detect the change in sound when the bacon stops "boiling" and starts "frying". As someone commented ;gas is noisey. Vinny.    Ps I don't make pockets !!!!!

Go System make a gas conversion kit for the Trangia which is actually a bit cheaper than the Trangia version.  Personally if I was going the gas route I would go for either a can top gas stove like a MSR Pocket Rocket, or if you want added stability/wind resistance go for a remote canister stove like the Primus Express Spider.  You could even use your existing Trangia pots and frying pan with the Spider :)

Thanks I will give it much consideration. Must check cooking times and cannister vols. Looks like I might be down loading myself with gas cannisters. Vinny

CALLING ALL BACK-PACKERS (anybody,really)

At the moment I carry 2 and 1/2 Ltrs which will normally lasts me 2wks; cooking time per day ----about 1hr. I don't want speed (although this is something I will have to endure !) but trying to reduce wt. & vol.

Hi people of the outdoor world, Im new here so be gentle. I would just like to through my 2 pence worth in. I use the white box stove and meths for cooking and find it ultra light and very small(which is what we are after)and fantastic for cooking on. I store my white box stove, my meths, fire steel and kfs all inside the small mess tin. I have used lots of different methods over the past 20 + years and find this stove the best of them all. For any hiking/camping trip light weight is the way to go and the white box stove is certantly light weight.
cheers
