Ahhh, welcome to the world of Salomon Quest's Lenny! :)

There like trainers with ankle support

I really like mine, very comfortable and I've grown pretty attached to them... but...

The Gore-tex lining on mine has started to leak after less than a year.  The water isn't gushing in or anything, but on a day walk through the usual wet Mournes my socks are wet when I take the boots off.

A bit of internet research would suggest that all Gore membranes in boots are quite easily damaged through wear and tear, so I don't think the fault lies with Salomon.  Seems to be a problem with all fabric boots; they rely on the membrane to stop water getting in but the membrane has a limited lifespan and is easily damaged by things like grit, small stones or even sharp toe nails.  Once the membrane fails then the boot has no water resistance as the suede/fabric doesn't offer any real protection.

I've heard of this happening on several brands of fabric boots.  I think the only answer if you want dry feet is either go for leather boots (the leather can be waterproofed on the outside) or wear waterproof socks!  Or just stuff the whole notion of dry feet and get trail shoes ;)

Don't let that put you off, the Salomon's are still great boots and mine have served me well.  Just wish expensive boots had a longer lifespan but I think this is a problem inherent in all fabric boots.  As I can't afford to replace mine I will still be walking in them for a good while to come :)

Not yet, because I've only just recently convinced myself that the boots are definitely leaking and its not just sweaty feet :)  Now I just need to prove it, so the boots have had a good clean and are now drying out.  Once they have dried I will fill the inside of the boots with water.  If a damp spot shows on the outside of the boot then thats where the membrane is leaking.  Or at least thats the theory ;)

Watch out you don't warp the insoles with your experiment, it hapened with mine when giving them a good proper clean out.  They sit a wee bit high now into my arch but I'm not generally aware of it when I get walking (lots of other grumbles surface then!).
