Tidy up day...
« on: April 27, 2010 »

Who would be up for hitting some areas and clearing up the rubbish? Obviously those woods north of fofanny damn would be a prime target. Doesn't have to be an overnighter or anything crazy just head up with our lunch and a few bin bags each and clear away most of the rubbish. I'm sure if we even contatacted the council they might even supply us with the equipment. Although bringing it to people's attentions I feel that letting it stay there we're just as bad as the guys who left it there in the first place.

No date, just whenever. I don't think the rubbish is going anywhere (which is part of the problem!) I was more testing the water to see if anyone would be up for it, how about this saturday? or is that too short notice?

i'd be up for it Chris, but this saturday would be too short notice for me. We could do a bit of tidy up at the Donard wood camp?

I'm in.

I would also have said Annalong Wood but it wasn't too bad, there was pile of rubbish but it was piled up to one area. I'm sure 10 minutes would clear it after your overnight on the 8th.

Edit: Here's a list of sites that the folks from BRA have 'targeted' before (was a while ago tho). (source)

# The beach from Murlough Bay to The Slieve Donard Hotel
# Glen River, Slieve Donard and Slieve Commedagh
# Donard Wood, following the paths
# Fofanny Dam Forest
# Bloodybridge and Bog of Donard; then Chimney Rock
# Pigeon Rock carpark, up either side of the Slievenaman Road to Deer’s Meadow and round to the Spelga Dam carpark: also both sides of the Slievenaman road to Fofanny Dam
# All Hen Track
# The Kilfeaghan area near Cassy Water River
# Shanky’s Hollow and Ulster Way to Yellow Water River carpark
# Kilkeel Beach near Kilkeel harbour
# Trassey Track to Hare’s Gap

Seems to be fofanny at the min, its easy to get to aswell. I think any areas that are easilly accessibale will be the worst affected. I'm going to give mourne council a ring later let them know our intentions, see if they have any suggestions and see if I can get some equipment.

I wonder if the Conservation Volunteers do tidy-up or other work in the Mournes?

I was surprised at the amount of Rubbish in the Stone House at the top of Donard. You would think that if people made all that effort to get up there, they would at least respect it!

If I worked for the council, I would be regularly checking walking club web sites and forums like this and when they are heading out on group trips, ask them all to bring a few extra bits of rubbish back each, and a member of the council would take it off them and dispose of it. It would definatley help.

Maybe this is something we all could be doing, it wouldnt increase your weight much, but would definatley help.

Mourne Heritage Trust are meant to have Volunteer Rangers who help look after designated areas.  Don't know much about the Trust, other than what I've read on their website in the past.  Maybe a tidy up could be arranged through them, or they might be able to help provide those litter picker type things and some bin liners?
