Title: I'm after a tent!
Post by: Matthew on January 25, 2010
Evening all. Basically I'm after a tent. I have two choices as far as I see it.

1.   Marmot grid

2.   terra nova laser

I am heading to Venezuela in the summer for a month with World Challenge and I do not fancy lugging one of their big tents around with me.

I was at Cotswold yesterday, both tents were up and I was persuaded to go with the Marmot I am not sold. After thinking about it I think that it's too heavy as we have a weight restriction on the plane and it's too big to fit in my pack so I think I'm going to take it back.

the purpose of this is not just to have something to so to south America in, I am in the hills most weekends. I'm not planning on staying on the top of Donard so I don't need anything bomb proof.

Any thoughts or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers for the advice. From further looking I think I am going to go for the laser large 1. Its only 400g heavier! If 400g makes the difference between me having a good dander of failing from exhaustion it will be a sad day.

If nothing else, the Laser Comp is a very well regarded tent that is endlessly well reviewed. Venezuela is a hell of a trek - best of luck with that!

Thanks for that. Its going to be a class adventure but with 17 pupils it might well be a nightmare

The laser Comp is a great tent, and should do well for you in Venez.

Chris Townsend used it to do all the Munro's in Scottish winter with no problems, so its a bit sturdier than most give it credit, I haven't had any problems with mine at all.

There aren't many that come close for its weight or pack size, however if you have the time to wait for mail order I'd definitely have a look at the Henry shires Tarp Tent range, specifically the scarp 1, it looks a very good tent for the money and the reviews I've seen tend to agree.

If you are going for a month, you'll be glad of all the extra space you can get. I'd try and save some weight elsewhere and go for the tent with a bit more room.

Yea it is for a month. I want to be able to use it in the hills when i get home too. Even though the laser is sold as a 2 man tent it's undoubtedly cosy. The laser large looks the business.

have a look online and see if you can see any eureka spitfire 2 tents, 1.8 kg 9' long, no vestibule, but there's so much space inside that's not a problem. i love mine, very quick to pitch and stands up to a blow well.
here's a link to one:

eureka make jack wolfskin tents and are superb quality.

come up and have a look if you want mate.

Thanks for that, I bought the Terra Nova laser a few weeks ago for £160 new while I was at a World Challenge planning Conference in Harrogate. Thanks for the heads up though
