Title: Greetings from across the pond...
Post by: The_Yank on December 09, 2009
Hello and greetings from the US of A!

Don't ask how I managed to find your forums, I've been sworn to secrecy by Jonno.  I'm a former outdoor enthusiast who now spends more time running my very active teenage daughters around for all of their activities.  I used to do a lot of backwoods backpacking here in the US and was formerly in our Army.  I lost track of my backpacking past and have just recently reacquired the bug to get back out in the woods.

Some of my past trips have included:

The Grand Canyon (twice).  Once Rim to River and back in one day and once with my girls.
The Grand Tetons (13,700 camp)
Yellowstone National Park (camping in grizzly country)
The Badlands (South Dakota) - My personal favorite.

And lastly here is a picture of the Grand Canyon I took just this past spring:

I'll do my best to understand 'your' version of English and hope you can decipher mine.

Cheers!

You're going to make everyone jealous of huge expanses of American wilderness. And, of course relaxed gun laws and cheap petrol :)
Great to have you onboard.

You can go anywhere you like there.  The hiking is amazing.  Lots of switch backs and canyons on the way down (and back up).  It isn't for the faint of heart though.  The altitude is 8,000ft asl so the air is thin.  It is 12 miles from the rim (where this picture was taken) down to the river below.

It is the Bright Angel Trail if you are interested in googling it and reading further.  I highly recommend seeing it in your lifetime.
