Title: Under your sleeping bag
Post by: Wolf_Larson on September 30, 2009
What is the best thing to put under your sleeping bag for a good nights sleep.

Your bed ;)

I use a self inflating mat. I'm a terrible sleeper at the best of times so I haven't decided how good they are. For comfiness vs weight they are good but nothing beats a foam rollmat for lightweight.

a foil blanket would be good for heat as well to either wrap around you or just to put underneath!

i'll sleep pretty much on anything/anywhere at the minute i'm on a self inflating yoke but a good old foam roll mat is hard to bet on weight and value as jonno said

It's an Exped Synmat for me. 7cm of sleepy time bliss. Rolls up half the size of a foam mat, though it weighs a bit more, but every gram is worth it for the wonderful night's sleep. I used to use a thermarest prolite4 but once I got the synmat, I swapped it for a tarp.

I've been pondering mats and I think I'm going to bin the self inflating mat for a foam roll. The weight saving is quite alot - as much as 1kg. They're not as comfy tho..

Sleep is important to me, and although I can lie anywhere and nap for 90mins I need comfort for a proper night's rest (not much padding on me).

Foam Karrimats are far too solid.  I did spend about 24hrs on a Z-rest (on scree) which seemed fine, although I was very ill so may have been distracted.  Would be keen to try one again if anyone has one to lend me...

Currently have a Therm-a-Rest Prolite 4 which inflates like a dream, has a nice grippy bottom, and kept me pretty warm bivvying on snow at -12.  I do like to sleep on my side though, so it is still a bit thin for perfection.

I'm looking at those Exped mats somewhat lustfully.  There may be a prolite 4 for sale this year!

I've got an Alpkit Reg Airic, but if I'm looking a bit of luxury I nick the wife's Fat Airic, and if I'm trying to save weight I take one of the wains' Wee Airics.

I've a hammock that I still haven't used more than a year after getting it.

I have a hammock and I've only managed one short night in it. As soon as the weather gets better I'll be giving it another go.

I traded my Prolite 4 for a Big Tarp from Andywink and got myself an Exped Synmat instead. Best thing I did as far as getting a good night's sleep is concerned, though it does take up more room in my bivi bag. I now sleep in the bivi on top on the mat, instead of putting the mat inside the bag. Highly recommended though.

I do need a new bivi as well - may consider something like AlpKit's Hunka XL if the mat takes up extra room... although a smaller bivi is lighter, so might be better to keep mat outside like yourself.

Was thinking of the down version as I hope to visit many cold places - so I'd better get saving :)
