Bag arrived this morning and it was dispatched yesturday.
Got the bag outta the stuff sack and thought it looked a bit thin but after a quick shake it really lofted to almost 3 times the size.
Also supplied a large storage sack, mini stuff sack & compression sack.
all in all I'm well chuffed and cant wait to get it out on the hills.
As I said only good things to say about alpkit and would highly recommened them.

frig me mate! at that price i'd expect a spanish midget to carry it round the hills with me! if your lookin for sound advice i'd follow what 666pack said. You've said its your 1st bag, and you have no idea about camping, i would buy a cheaper bag and spend the rest of the dosh on other kit. Your only goin round the coast of ireland, its really not trekking into the arctic circle!
-
Great looking bag 6pack,
Im going to follow your lead on this one, as it seems the same as the wm antelope SDL.
Cheers lads for the help, id be lost without you all !

I had the Alpkit Pipedream 600 out for its first proper cold weather test at the weekend and it wasn't bad. I was only wearing a light baselayer top and underwear and was fine apart from my feet were a bit cold (but I should have worn socks). It wasn't that cold - maybe 4 degrees but I was only under a tarp and there was a chilly wind.
-
you were camping at the weekend??? you nutter???

Cheers

I've got the vango venom, its sweet - light comfy, but don't forget to get a liner :)
Excellent MMM doss bag

I have pipedream 600 and they are great.
-
I'm another Pipedream fan, except I've got the PD400. Great bag, small pack size and nice and light.
-
There's a good few on here with a Pipedream 600. I'd rate them but I've not tried any alternatives. Would definitely recommend them.

I have a down bag as well, Its a "nanok" good bag but I'm not sure I'd bother getting another down one. Try looking at the mountain hardwear lamina series, awesome synth bags that have a super small pack size and weight yet still hold their own in the temperature ratings game.
-
Cheers will look into that chris . Main reason I was thinking of changing to a down bqg was pack size as my synthetic bag takes up a lot of room . Think synthetic bag would also suit me best as I don't think I would treat a down bag with enough respect
-
I'm starting to hear that the technology is advancing to the point that a synthetic bag can be close to the warmth and weight of a down bag but without the problems when it gets wet?

Thats the benefit of synthetic bags. Down filled equipment is designed for places where its too cold to rain. I do love the feeling of crawling into a nice warm down bag tho and if I was looking for a new bag and I saw a down one at a good price I'd snap it up! I'd never buy a down jacket though! Primaloft all the way.
-
I think Mr. 6 Pack had posted up a good link at one stage arguing the merits of a synthetic bag. I found my PD400 to be very warm in the summer, so I've been thinking of getting a higher temperature rated synthetic bag for summer use and keeping the Pipedream for winter. Which is partly why I wish I had of got the PD600, but anyway!
That said, at the last Binnian summit camp I was very glad of my Pipedream! Without the shelter of the tarp I appreciated the extra warmth. I did start to worry a bit when the rain started coming down, but my bivvy bag kept the rain out. I ended up with thin layer of condensation on the inside of the bivvy, but thats only to be expected when you are breathing into a fairly well sealed up and enclosed space. Despite the bag getting slightly damp from the condensation it dried out quickly and showed no ill effects.

I hear they have some new Berghaus bags that are prob ok value, or check out the MH Lamina. Something good for -5 to -10 should be adequate for our winters but as always with these things, depends or how you sleep, where you sleep, and what other gear you have (thermals/down vest or jacket?).
-
I just Bought the 1100 Flare Berghaus Bag for Kili.
Have not slept in it yet but will post back when I have

well tonights the nigt to test it out ;D (-4 forecast so get up them hills and you should hit -10 ;) )

Yeah I had a look at the temps they will drop below freezing at night and your bag is only rated to 3'c. Hope you sleep warm!

Question?
Would a 3 season bag and a liner make it 4 season? or would it be a better idea to get a 1-2 Season sleeping bag and put it into a 3 season bag?
-
I think a liner inside a sleeping bag maybe boosts the rating by a degree or two, but personally I've never tried it. I get tangled up enough inside a bivvy bag, never mind a liner :)
At the weekend I used my Pipedream 400 inside a bivvy bag even though I was in the tent. Definitely helped and I felt very warm all night with just my base layers on. Perhaps that might help? Obviously the bivvy bag is heavier than a liner, but you can also use it as your survival bag and they are handy to sit on at rest stops!

There's a sleeping bag that Tesco sell that I swear by, but I do get a bit of friendly banter here on NI-Wild. I used two of these on Saturday night inside my bivvi bag (no tent, or tarp) and was as toasty as anything. Quite surprising really when you see that they only have an extreme rating of +1.7°C.
For the purpose of trying to make a 3 Season into a 4 Season it might be just the ticket.
This is the Tesco Micro-lite Mummy Sleeping Bag (http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.204-2384.aspx):
"This microlite mummy sleeping bag in a graphite and lime colourway offers superior insulation with reduced weight, so it's ideal for travelling light. With a polyester lining and shell at 240 togs, it has a comfort rating of +13.2-16.3°C and an extreme rating of +1.7c°C. Features include a 2-way reversible zip and 4-way compression strap to minimise the space it requires when rolled"
It really is quite tiny when compressed and only weighs 853g. I have used this all last winter, the summit of Carrantoohill and the Crimbo camp where I'm guessing we had a temperature of -10°C, since drydag seen -6°C on his way home at 9pm.
Anyway... Worth considering as a liner, especially when it's only £13, very well made and fully machine washable. Mine gets washed after every trip and is still in tip top condition.
:)
-
Dowser, you forgot to mention that you boost the temperature rating of your sleeping bag by around 10 degrees through the consumption of Scotch :P
-
And by having the foresight to bring a hotwater bottle, ie a small dog.

Tesco do have two on the go at the moment. My one which is fully synthetic and a Tesco Ultra-Lite Mummy Sleeping Bag (http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.200-7415.aspx), which is a down bag. A bit more expensive and more hassle than its worth being natural down, so make sure you don't lift the wrong one. Both are available off-the-shelf in most of the large Tesco stores.
If it's a good liner that your looking to go with your 3 Season, I reckon give the synthetic Tesco one a go. If it doesn't work out it's only £13. You will definately use it on it's own in the summer months for ultra lite hiking.
:)

240 togs!?!?! Not sure how they are measuring, but as every 2 Togs gives about an extra 7 degrees, you're good to -798 ;D That bag's well over-engineered!
As are most household duvets... when I read this I ditched my 13.5 Tog for a 4.5 Tog so I don't become all soft and needing ridiculous amounts of insulation to sleep outdoors. I have a selection of sleeping bags if 'the day after tomorrow' does happen... or the Russians turn off our gas :)
Lower limit of Comfort EN 13537

6 4 10

Back to serious - not a bad bag for the dough and decent weight for 2 of them.
Dowser, I'm interested if you put one bag inside the other, or just sandwiched the other bag on top (held by the bivy)? With a decent mat to insulate from the ground, and able to sleep on your back, this would use all the insulation in an 'unsquished' way to extend the range even further. The bivy itself would have reduced convection and helped a bit. I would guess though that the temp at the weekend was actually warmer than -6 due to the more stable environment under the trees, and being elevated enough to be above the 'cold sink'... Ray Jardine would say, "an ideal camp"!

Well spotted on the 240 tog rating... Do you reckon I've got them on trade descriptions then..? Maybe I can get my £13 back lol.
I slept with one inside the other giving equal insulation from above and below and had a 3/4 length self-inflating mat below me inside the bivvi bag. Your probably right about the temp being warmer than -6. I was thinking, the higher up the hill the colder, but true enough... warm air rises so we may have been up out of the cold a bit. It definately didn't feel all that cold to me but I did have a nip or two of the Famous Grouse in me.
I woke up in the middle of the night boiling and took my fleece and shirt off, leaving me in a t-shirt. Next morning I realised I had just threw the shirt and fleece outside my bivvi bag. My thinking whilst tipsy must have been "I didn't want to smother my dog who was in my sleeping bag with me". I had a lovely damp shirt to pull on the next morning for breakfast, Doh!
-
Wonder what figure you could put on the insulation provided by the bivvy bag. Should be worth a few degrees. I used a silk liner on Sat night but it's hard to judge how much it helped.
-
A silk liner is the ticket, I had one on while inside my sleeping bag and was toasty warm
-
I hav'nt use a down bag for quite a while, but always kept it for above the snow line as water is the enemy of down, if it gets wet it looses all its insulating qualities. Thats one reason why man made fiber has become popular. The main reason for needind a down bag is weight and space if these are not an issue stick with the man made fibers. The other being price.
Afew points which may be useful for those not too farmiliar with down
1 good quality down has a very smal amount of quill where as choped feather has a lot and does not have the insulating properties of down( choped feather will be found in the poorer quality bags, not nessarly the cheapest)
2 good bags should not have any seams that are sewn straight through, bringing the outside into contact with the inside. But should be box quilted giving the down enough space to expand ( loft)
3 never leave your bag stored in the compresssion sack and when you have your camp set up take the sleeping bag out and fluff it up, this will give it time to expand. The more space between the outer and the inner the warmer it will be.
4 when you lay down your weight will compress the down leaving no insulation between you and the ground, the insulation needs to be replaced with something that will form an insulating layer below you ie, karrymat.
5 be careful not to tear it as leaking down will make an awful mess. a stick plaster may keep it together until a more permanent repair is made
6 keep it gry at all costs.
-
