Title: Slieve Binnian for Lunch - Sat 28th Feb
Post by: RedLeader on February 24, 2015
I've not seen a peak in months so I'm intending to break my 2015 duck this Saturday. Just a straightforward one - park at Carrick Little and dander up Slieve Binnian (http://www.mourne-mountains.com/mournes/mountains/slieve-binnian/) following the wall for a spot of lunch, then back down the same way or over the other side (I'll consider interesting alternatives though).

I'm aiming to leave Carrick Little at 11ish and be done by mid afternoon. Feel free to join me.

That was a fun hike RL. Pretty misty and the wind was wild on the summit, but sure, wouldn't have it any other way, lol. Coffee tastes so good with a bit of altitude thrown in.

It was indeed a great dander. Am sorry to say my legs are more sore than I'd have expected from one peak, seems like I need a bit of a fitness improvement :)

The weather was awful later on, we saw windspeeds of 49kph, that's touching a force 7. Needless to say we didn't hang around too long :) Still, it was a great day regardless of the wet and windy weather.

Are you sure it wasn't 49mph? I didn't think 49kph was as bad as that.

I arrived a little early so dined alone on the summit, but fortunately I met the lads on the way back down again.

Interestingly I bought the hand held anemometer because I have a weather station at the house and I reckoned the windspeed was recording well lower than I'd have expected. Seems like this device validates the accuracy of the station, I think wind just feels like it must be higher than it is. I suppose hold your face out the window the next time you're in the car doing 30mph, it's a stronger wind than you'd think. (Don't actually stick your face out the window at 30mph if you're driving, don't want to end up on Youtube.)

I think the max speed we experienced was probably a shade higher again but not by any massive amount and it was such a strong wind it was actually painful to have the rain blown into our faces.

Just checking the windspeed dear.

Haha! It seems 49kph is equal to 30.4mph. I assumed that would be a little on the breezy side but it seems crazy in that video. I was considering trying Sleive Bearnagh during the week with the predicted 30-40mph winds. Might have to rethink that!

It's been an eye opener for me. Mentally I think I've been imagining windspeeds around double what that actually are. On Binnian on Saturday I'd defo have guessed 50mph or so.

Once it gets too windy for LandyLiam to get by with shorts is when we really ought to be afraid! ;)

They were trousers when I started !!!   ;D

The most I've measured in the hills was 69mph (I was hiding behind the Mourne wall at the time and sticking the anemometer above it, I wasn't even on a summit! I've found above 40mph its gettings very difficult to walk so thats a good gauge of the wind. What would we do without our Mourne wall  :)

Flip me, was anyone able to sleep in that, surely the tents would have been destroyed after a few hours of that? Did you get a windspeed?

It was like that ALL night  :( everyone I spoke to said they felt like they'd been didn't sleep at all, I reckon we probably never got more than 15 mins of unbroken sleep before being rudely awoken by the wind. 2 tents in our group of 3 broke poles. For one poor lad it was his first night camping! He didn't stay for the second night. No anemometer with me, doh!

we camped Friday and Saturday night.Ed and Oisin had the Vortex for protection and I used the Vango Mirage.both tents preformed well although I was nervous of nearly trees even though the wind was blowing the other way,lol

Impressive that tents can take that sort of beating.

High winds is definitely an area of bivvy bag supremacy. If it's windy enough to blow away a 75 kilo bag which is a couple of feet off the ground - then it's no safe place for tents of any kind.

Bivvy ftw!
