A new handbook to guide coach drivers around the best scenic routes in the Mourne Mountains has been launched.
Supported by the Northern Ireland Tourist Board in conjunction with Down, Banbridge and Newry and Mourne District councils, Mourne Heritage Trust and the Federation of Passenger Transport (NI) the handbook is a comprehensive guide to getting the best out of the Mourne Coastal Route while travelling in coaches and other large vehicles.
The handbook includes a detailed map of the entire Mourne Coastal Route, tips for drivers, as well as a Mourne Mountains visitor code.
Along with maps of the High Mournes, Slieve Croob, Slieve Roosley and Whitewater scenic loops, and the best start and finish points for coaches, there are also street maps of Kilkeel, Newry, Warrenpoint and Newcastle included, listing key attractions, shopping, eating, facilities and parking available.
The route maps also show the hierarchy of roads and advisory one way systems, allowing drivers to plan the best routes for their journeys, avoid large vehicles meeting and approach narrow bridges from the correct direction.
The routes have been carefully chosen to maximise the scenic value of each and to embrace the rural nature of this part of Northern Ireland.
An array of visitor information on mountain viewpoints, picnic areas, outdoor activities, ancient monuments, museums and cultural centres also features in the handbook, as well as car and coach parking and coach washing facilities.
Aine Kearney, NITB’s Director of Product Development said: “This new handbook is not only a boon for group organisers, tour planners and drivers arranging visits and excursions in the Mourne Mountains, it is also a great support project for the tourist signage around the Mourne Coastal Route.
“By producing a brochure specifically for the coach sector to highlight the scenic loops off the spine of the Mourne Coastal Route into the high Mournes we are highlighting the area’s reputation as exciting tourism destination and ensuring visitors get the best from their excursion.”
The Federation of Passenger Transport (NI) will coordinate the distribution of the handbook to coach operators in the UK and Republic of Ireland through a series of trade magazines.
An online version will also be available for general usage.
