:) Kirsty Young's castaway is woodsman Ray Mears. :)
A traveller to the world's remotest corners and a renowned expert in bushcraft, wild cooking and survival techniques, he's one of very few castaways who would genuinely relish the challenges of a desert island.
Those of us not possessed of his spirit and skill can live vicariously through his exploits on TV and through his survival handbooks.
He says of the wild: "I can see nature; I feel it intuitively and I can understand what can't be written." ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Nice one. Gona listen now. I watched a lot of Mears's old shows on you-tube over Christmas and he really is streets ahead of any rival. Extreme Survival, Bushcraft and Wild Food are excellent. He shows you not only how to survive in the wilderness but also to observe and enjoy it. Others show you how to escape it as quickly as possible! While I'll sometimes watch the new yankee shows on Sky like "Mountain Men" etc. they are hyped up, contrived nonsense compared to Ray.
Read Ray's autobiography recently too. It's good but not remarkable. Some chapters better than others, the bit about tracking Raoul Moat is great.
