too cut a long story short I'm planning on joining the MBA (Mountain bothy association) as I quite like the whole idea of the bothy culture, however this is not the point of this post, does anyone know of any bothy's in NI (excluding the Salt Isalnd one) As looking at the MBA webby only ones on the mainland are mentioned. I'm pretty much hoping that some one will have heard tell of a few round here that arnt cared for by the mba and hence wouldn't be on their map. Or does ni and ireland have its own both association?

there's one at Dunseverick, but it's in a terrible state.
the CCKA have a project underway to fix it up.

Thats a good idea chris, im a painter by trade and also do wood work for a hobbie, if you get any info let us all know, regards Wolf.

Bothies work well in Scotland where they're remote and hard to reach. In Northern Ireland any that there were would be vandalised beyond recognition in the first year by dickheads.

Where is Dunseverick?

ture enough jonno, its just such a shame that thats the case tho. Immagine a few bothies round the mournes you could do so much with that kind of shelter there, especially the likes of us climbers, it would eliminate the need for a monster tab in carrying all that hardwear!
-
I feel a build coming on.

Aww mate now your talking! Immagine our own NI wild bothy in the mournes! complete with a wee stove and everything! i think i would live in it!
-
Would be good in the thick of Annaghlong forest or donard wood out of site so it couldn't be wreaked.
-
If there where stones and other things about i dont see why not. ;)
-
lol there's a whole abandoned quarry at the foor of binnian mate! you've gotta get your self into the mournes soon mate get aquainted.
-
Dam, i want to build a bothy on the mournes, ill have to get myself out there indeed chris_8764 ;D

Go for it. Honestly there is no better place to "learn" hill walking than the mournes. Get yourself a 1:25000 map of the mournes and a decent compass and look up how to take a bearing online then hit the mournes for a day, if you do manage to get geographically misplaced you'll be able to oriantate yourself no probs because there will always be three peaks in sight (assuming its not misty!) and if all else fails your pretty much gauranteed to hit the mourne wall at some stage and presto you found your way home!

-
I got the cloths, i need tent, sleeping bag, backpack,
Im going today to see if i can get the Pro Action Hike Lite 1 Person Tent.
Im finding it hard to choose a sleeping bag as i want a real good one and am willing to pay good money for it.
I want it to be 4 season and easy dryed if it gets wet, also light.
-
If you have a tent, there's no reason why your sleeping bag would get wet. You could buy a water proof stuff sack to be uber sure aswell.
-
Yeh true chris_8764 , ill pay extra for a good 4 season warm, lightest sleep bag.
I have a phew sleeping bags posted on the gear home page, i think might be good.

http://www.canoeni.com/canoe-trails/north-coast-sea-kayak-trail/access-point/port-moon/ Pity its only Sea access
-
Why is this bothy only availabl from sea?? I have looked a it on Google Maps and it looks accessible over land or is the isue private land owners denying access?
-
I think it's placement makes it all but impossible to get to from land, it's infront of a large cliff. The blurb does say there are sheep, I'm guessing they can get there by land though :)

definately looks like you could naigate round the waters edge to get there though I suppose it may be a different story when yor on the cliff!! Looks likea nice spot to spend a night and to awkward to get to for drunken muppets to wreck the place.
