Title: Percy Bysshe Caves
Post by: truescot on October 20, 2013
Read an article which states these caves are named after Percy Bysshe Shelley (Mary Shelley's husband) when he visited the local area. Does anyone know if and when he visited and when the caves obtained their name?

This is a really interesting question and I can find zero information on the net. Maybe someone local to the area might have more info?

I read somewhere that he never actually visited the cave! can't remember the source though. Maybe someone named it after as a reference to one of his works? so I did a quick search and found a title called "Idols of the Cave" which is more about  inner caves of thought that places to bivvy in. Here's some more info.

So I would guess it was named by a fan of his poetry.

We should try and make an excursion to the caves earlier in the day before the Halloween camp gets settled.

We are indeed intending a quick trip to the caves before the camp at the weekend. More info in the thread if anyone wants to come along:

I finally made it into the third chamber today  ;D

Here's a wee tip to get through the narrow entrance to third chamber. Bring a tarp or groundsheet and lay it along the passage, then you can put you hands in front of you and slide yourself in  ;)

I love these caves, I personally got myself stuck in them at one point, though after some pause for thought managed to wiggle backward to freedom from my granite confines. You can go down to the 3rd chamber where the might be a 4th if you look up.... I tried but its tight. There is another area too, in the second chamber you go behind the large slab and wiggle diagonally down to another area though trying to get through here is where I got stuck. I want to go back down soon though and take some photos of where I could go no further.
