Title: What's in your First Aid Kit?
Post by: DryBag on August 26, 2009
Do most people just carry a first aid kit they've bought, or have you all made up your own?

If you made your own, what's in it?

Same with me! last few times I've been in I've actually had strangers approach me and offer the use of their 1st aid for my injuries!

Must say I always carry one in some shape or form.

It usually consists of plasters, antiseptic wipes and cream, headache tabs, some common bandages and absorbant pads, and also some safety pins and surgical tape.

I have a big box of stuff that I select from depending on the trip.

I went with 2 friends up Donard when it was very wintery there.  Most likely injuries that day - hypothermia or broken ankle on ice. So I packed a splint, small roll of gaffer tape, space blanket and a spare insulating layer.

When I'm traveling it's more like:
blister kit
paracodol / ibuprofen
anti-histamines
anti-sickness
antacid
immodium for emergencies
dioralyte
alcohol wipes
plasters / steri-strips
wound dressing / tape
E45 cream (in a film can or smaller)
anti-septic cream
eye-stain
tweezers
iodine tablets - splint can be improvised so ditched.
When remote and self-supported - small medical book.

I bring Diamox along for high altitude but have never taken it.
For 3rd world travel you may wish to add a sterilised scalpel and needles.

I have needed most of it before, and it packs fairly small if you bring sensible quantities.  Remember to put it at the top of your bag (accessible) and that it's clearly marked so anyone can find it in an emergency (may want to hide it in something non-descript for going through customs).
