Title: Protection against midgies
Post by: Revsi75 on September 18, 2013
Ok so I have a bit of a dilemma...

During the warm weather that we had I was out camping with the mates and was literally eaten alive!  >:( Thanks to my super body :-\ I sweat, LOADS, which apparently really attracts them even more!

Even the near freezing water of lough shannagh didn't help.
I've heard that the Avon skin so soft is really good but you need to keep applying it regularly.
As we're now approaching winter, there really isn't much need for it, but just thought I'd ask to see if any seasoned campers or others had any ideas on what's good.

Anyone any thoughts on this?

Many swear by smidge that midge.

I find it ok but nothing beats a head net - or just climbing higher than they can handle.

Or if you have lots of money and slight genocidal tendencies - you can wipe out every midge in a one acre radius with the following:

My personal advice is to try the smidge and carry a headnet. When those fail - climb higher or move somewhere exposed with higher winds.

Cheers bud.

I do really like the idea of wiping them all out! maybe we should all get together and do sweep of the hills  ;D

I'll maybe try that smidge that midge. After I give this skin so soft a try.
problem is... that I was the only one that got bit really bad in comparison to my mates. check out my leg http://www.flickr.com/photos/98416456@N04/9799418054/in/set-72157635613437034

I've got a headnet now, but doubt I'll be wearing shorts again in the summer!

I've heard people saying about using those citronella tags.
Anyone heard much on these?

You probably didn't get bitten any more than your friends, some people are more allergic to midge bites than others. Head nets and high camps are the way to go.

The only thing I've ever found effective against midges is a headnet. The creams and lotions seem to have little effect for me.

My head wasn't too bad in comparison to my legs. Kinda look like I was shot with a bb gun... continuously ???

Well winters settling in... so they've gone into hiding, for another year.

Have a read at this, found it somewhat informative http://www.themidgieman.com (http://www.themidgieman.com)
