At the foot of Lamagan towards Lower Cove. Impact damage on the shell's tip but didn't go bang (yet).
-
Lamagan was used as a test fire site for the US Navy during world
War two. I won't bore you with the chemistry but the explosive used in shells like that will go "off" over time much like milk does. Luckily this means that the explosive (if any remains) in that shell is now inert and incapable of functioning. If it hasn't detonated since the second world war it is highly unlikely to do so now. The rust on the shell also means the shell has been compromised and is most likely damp inside.
Having said all that if it was me I'd dispose of it in one of the plunge pools or lakes in the mournes. Phosperous incendiary shells have been known to be found and ignite when dried out (about 99% sure this won't happen)
As a general rule in these sort of things tho if there's doubt, there's no doubt: get the bomb squad out!
-
Whats the grid ref, I'll come and get it. Thats awesome to find a whole shell unexploded.
-
I've been looking for another one of those for the other side of the mantlepiece ::)
-
If you told the bomb squad at least it is up to them to worry about what to do with it. They can decide to send one person to hike up to check it out or parachute a whole squad in. I'm sure part of your concern is about not making a big fuss but it's not like you're phoning to report a suspicious object in the Victoria Centre where you might end up having 50 businesses evacuated.
-
hang on a minute, i can cope with a victoria centre evacuation, but close the annalong valley! i think not :o well best leave it til monday morning so they'll have it away by the weekend ;)
-
Brilliant, I'd love to go look for this sort of thing. I like that it's left lying for others to find. Like risky geocaching ;)
-
The guys doing the path repairs found 2 on the same day with a digger somewhere around the bottom of Lamagan. Think the driver got a bit of a shock. They did contact the police and uIf bomb squad blew them up.

This reminds me of when i was watching the telly one friday afternoon and saw that Victioria square had been evacuated, a dozen fire appliances had been rushed to the sceen, and every road around the centre was closed off, diverting traffic and causing untold mayhem throughout the city.
I sat there thinking holly crap someones gonna get their Ba!!s rolled! Their gonna get crucified for this!!
My phone then rang to inform me that one of my fitters had tried to burn the place down with a set of burning gear. ::)

Err, accidentally I assume? Or did he finally crack with Apple and decide to take them out Falling Down style ;)

If the shell appeared to be empty, which is often the case, then its harmless. However if it contained a yellow-brown filling you should call the police. Apart from the fact that it might be dangerous, the police may want to remove it to prevent explosives falling into the hands of terrorists. You will need to know its exact location and they may ask you to accompany them in the search.

Opps, sorry forgot about this thread.
All good sensible advice....
In the end I decided to do the socially irresponsible thing....and just leave it there.
I'll not give co-ords...it's out there somewhere. There's a quarry hut not far from it.
As for dropping into one of the mourne lakes:
and also of a clip from the movie Four Lions demonstrating the dangers of transportation explosive materials, but I'll leave that for you to Google :)
