There's a whole host of orienteering events happening around Newcastle this weekend. If you've always wanted to try it out then this is a good time to start (you can do it as a group or family if wary of going out alone), just follow the signs to the registration caravan and tell them its your first time and they will talk you through what to do.
I'll be doing the Friday evening course and hopefully the Saturday one too, happy to help anyone if needed.
see http://www.niorienteering.org.uk/lvo/ for info (i've copied all the relevant stuff below)
FRIDAY - Newcastle town centre (excellent for beginners as you can't really get lost!)
Start from the carpark at Downs Road BT33 0AG by the entrance to The Slieve Donard Hotel at the Percy French which will be convenient for post-race refreshments. Three courses are on offer:
Long 5.1km
Middle 4.1km
Short/Junior 2.8km.
Any junior born after 21 June 1997 may only enter the Short/Junior course which is of orange standard. The course has 4 marshalled road crossings with timed-out legs. Start times for the juniors are 7.30pm to 7.45pm with starts for everyone else until 8.30pm.
Entry fees for Juniors £3, Senior members £5, Senior non-members £7.
