Title: What happened to Capanagh
Post by: FairWeatherCamper on June 06, 2013
Capanagh wood is my favourite wee spot for a wild camp. However I was just taking a look at it on Google Maps and couldn't help but notice that half of it has gone missing. Is this the effect of the dreaded Japanese Larch Disease?

Hope it's not just logging :( I had a lovely night there a few years back after walking some of the Antrim Hills Way.

Do you mean you hope it is just logging?  That is the purpose of the forest surely?

I think the two screen dumps make it look slightly worse because the earlier one has less zoom.  Incidently, FWC, how did you come to have an earlier picture?  Had you saved that at an earlier time or is there an earlier google maps version on the web?

Gee, that's too many questions, isn't it? ;)

Heh, fair point. I naturally assume forests are planted solely for the purposes of giving me something to hang my hammock on. Suppose logging is a natural part of forestry. Just seems a waste when we have little enough wild areas.

I too hadn't thought about the logging. you're right. The less zoomed Google image is older on Google and when you zoom in you get a newer image (hence the zoom difference). It is a huge chunk of the wood though.
