Title: Chimney rock looking for the plane wreckage
Post by: clairebear on May 06, 2013
Having been out of action for two weeks I decided that a wee trip up chimney rock via the old railway line to the summit and down the westerly side in search of the wreckage.  I wasn't quite ready for an epic day and overnighter but this wee route has been on my list of one to do for a while.  The weather wasn't looking great on the visibility front but it wasn't to rain so happy days.  Bank holiday weekend so I planned to get up early and I knew I'd only be up for 3-4 hours so a rather light pack was great.

Last time I came up there was snow!  Now I was sporting my shorts, no gaiters and a short sleeved helly.  Took the light rab fleece to walk in once in the cloud.

Excuse the scabby knees.

Up via bloody bridge and I knew from past posts on here that the disused railway had lots of interesting bits of old machinery and workings from when it was mined.  I followed the railway line up to carrs face, swept to the right and on up to the summit.  This is actually a brilliant route for an easy wee day and I will be taking my two nephews up here as they will be all into the old bits of stuff about.  Bit of scrambling but if your kids are up for it I'd highly recommend it.

This isn't really clear but there are still marks in the rock face where it has been mined, I don't know how it was done but hats off to these men back then.  No gyms needed for these guys.

On up to the summit and down the westerly side to try and stumble upon bits of metal looking like engines.  The visibility was pretty poor and I will be back on a clearer day as I only managed to find one bit.  Perhaps a little local knowledge would be good too.  I was pretty impressed when I found this bit.

I zig-zagged on down but nothing else.  Took a bearing and headed to the wall.  On the way found two old stone huts which were pretty cool.

From there it was down the way I came up, passed lots of walkers on the way up.

Great wee morning just exploring and talking photos.  Sometimes it's nice to get off the beaten track and away from the wall.

Next time I'm up and it's a clear day I would go back and try find more of the wreckage.

C.

They look like a pair of hockey players knees to me.  Chimney Rock is overlooked by plenty of folk but it is well worth checking out.  I was less successful looking for plane wreckage  :'(

Aye whoray they certainly are typical hockey player knees!  I'm so glad I nipped up chimney as its actually a nice wee climb, next good visibility day I'm up ill pass through to find more.

MM read your blog before going up as I didn't know what side to look for it, great write up btw.  Eagle rock also looks a nice climb to go up after.  Also on my list.

yeah red leader, straight up via bloody bridge to the disused railway line on the map, quite like BB route, only thing is it gets quite busy near the bottom.

I thought no-one got the 'walk the line' thing.  took me ages to think that one up  :D

Looks like a piece of a propellor boss you found, can any aviation heads confirm or deny?
