Title: new user - camping in the Mournes
Post by: kilmegan on April 08, 2013
Hi All,

new user from the Castlewellan area though have moved away. I am up home most weekends and now considering taking my son camping, so thought joining this site might be a step in the right direction.
Bar running and working outdoors at the weekends, I have no great outdoors knowledge. The last time I did any serious camping was almost ten years ago in NZ.
Hope to hear from some of you soon.

Declan

Welcome to the forum Declan. There have been plenty of camps over the last few weeks some more adventurous than others so I'm sure you could find something to grab your interest. You say your low on experience just fire the questions in and you'll get loads of top notch tips and advice to get you out there. Your son will love it he will have you tortured to get out.

thanks for the welcome Glen.
Snooping on a few threads, I am truly envious of some of the escapades folks have got up to during the recent ice age.
Unfortunately work/family/study/lack of knowledge commitments means I was unable to do much, bar a couple of forays round a ( surprisingly tame) tardree forest.
My son is 4 and my step-son is 14, not sure how a 4 year old will cope with camping  ;D

Get the wee man on a few garden camps and see how he fares will probably surprise you. My only worry and I'm paranoid about it is are they warm enough nothin like being freezin to spoil a night under canvass.

Hi Glen,
I have 4 yr old twins who started camping last spring, tho mostly in forest parks and they love it.  Even in the colder weather.  Only bummer is the needing to pee at 4or 5am when you really don't want to be peeling yourself out of your sleeping bag!!

Hi Declan, welcome to the NI Wild.

Ah Tardree, I have memories of going on a longer walk than intended and having to carry both my kids round, with the sweat blinding me.

Hi Declan, welcome to the NI Wild.

thanks for all the responses folks.
Yes I more often than not end up carrying my son on my shoulders when we take a walk in tardree, its a good workout if nothing else!
First question should be what do I need for basic gear, beyond the obvious?
I think a garden camp ( as suggested thanks) up home in castlewellan might be a good idea (somewhere close to basic amenities!).
