Me and my Brother is organising a Easter Camp 30th March 2013 on a saturday, Family Friendly, Easter Celebration around the campfire and everyone is welcome to join in the fun.

We are doing a egg hunt for the kids like last year, as the kids seem to enjoy it. 6 Easter Egg Prizes total.

We will also be holding a free raffle for all the attending adults to win a hip flask with niwild logo and name on it.

Hi folks, I haven't been out camping since sept, so work permitting me and the kids ŵill be there again, it,ll be great catching up with everyone and eating DW,s Easter eggs lol G :D

I'd be interested in coming with 3 kids if its still possible?  Although can't confirm til closer to the time.  We've camped before but usually v close to civilisation.  :)

Of course its still possible. your more than welcome to join us. I put you down as possible as you can't confirm until closer to the time. don't worry its only about a mile from civilisation :), best thing about this is, it's nice and peaceful.  ;D

There is a link to a map on the first post of where the spot is in donard forest for anyone that doesn't know exactly where the spot it.
The day before the easter camp I will post my mobile number so that if you have any problems finding the spot you can text me or call me. I will be happy to help.  :)

hello, yea the weather does look a bit better. :D  If it still had been heavy rain and high winds I would of rescheduled the date to next saturday due to kids being at the camp. I was waiting until wednesday for the final result of the weather before I do that. but by looking at that, I don't think I will reschedule. but we will see on wednesday. If the weather is reasonable on the 23rd March, when I look at it on wednesday, then there won't be a reschedule ;D. if its really windy and heavy rain. I will reschedule :(.

I will let you know on wednesday, what the final verdict of this? but so far its still on at the 23rd march 2013.

(Side Question) If this is still going on this saturday 23rd march, if the rain drenched the wood up in the forest through out the week. would it be possible for couple of you guys to bring some bags of wood up. last time I was in newcastle I seen the poundshop beside the bus station, they where selling bags of wood. don't know how much it will cost though. but I assume there cheap as its a pound shop ???.
I would carry a bag of wood up myself, but I will have my hands full of easter eggs and plastic eggs for the egg hunt and other things. plus my kid and my gf is coming with me too. she will have her hands full with our son, on the way up.

p.s don't worry I will be hiding the plastic eggs, where as my gf will be doing the egg hunt with my son therefore there is no cheating.   ;D

thanks, by looking at the weather forecast it's pretty much rain all the way, so the wood in the forest will be soaked. thanks for the volunteering for that. your help is appreciated.

hopefully the bag of dry wood will dry up some wet wood in the forest.

I'll bring a firelog, but i reckon there'll be enough big logs to  chop up, the wood's going to be dry on the inside. If anyone could bring a tarp to set-up so any kiddies aren't standing around in the rain and have a bit of shelter. Also it could be a plan to check if the old tree shelter is still standing.

If you go up to the second bridge as normal you can easily step across the river about 20 meters above the bridge using the few big stepping stones in the river.

Second bridge: Was up there on Saturday, bridge is kinda open, fencing is parted on both sides (and concrete is no longer wet!)

I'll play it by ear on the day, the snow doesn't bother me but may make getting there difficult  :o  may have to leave the little one at home though.

you can easily stay to the right of the river the whole way up (which is my normal route anyway) after the 1st bridge follow the road a little and you will soon see an obvious track into the forest, its well trodden now thanks to the bridge closure.

Be careful up there guy's it could be right and cold. I was going to make the effort, if possible on Saturday to make it but I'm not sure the car would get there if there is snow on the roads.

Hi guys keep all your fingers and toes crossed that the roads stay clear enough to get too this camp hopefully its all a big fuss over a wee dusting of snow and not the huge Major Snow Event on some forecasts.

Boss has signed me up for a charity ball thing on Saturday night....so instead of trudging up the hill in the freezing cold with snow down the back of my jacket I'll be in a tux nibbling pastry things and listening to a jazz band  :'( First world problems huh?

Does anyone fancy a walk beforehand?

 I was thinking of starting early and parking at either meelmore lodge or the trassy carpark - then from there walking the trassy path to hares gap, then between Commedagh and Donard and onwards to the forest. It's probably a 3 hour walk but max elevation of 570 so hopefully still above freezing. Not sure if I will bother if alone - but maybe I can recruit someone to join? :)

well I will be there and my brother will be there.  only about 4 people have confirmed there going aswell. but people might just turn up anyway.

as for the snowy ground. That doesn't look to bad. most of it should be away hopefully by saturday.

If there is still alot of snow up at the campsite might be an idea to camp down at the old shelter site RE SpecimanYaks second pic there dosent seem to be just as much snow. just an idea.. :)

I think kids will love the snow if it's there still.
I do the egg hunt behind the wall beside where we are camping. It will be a good sunny day as the weather forecast it to be.


5pm same as last year the easter egg hunt will be on. (I have only 6 medium eggs to win in the egg hunt. but don't worry if there is more than 6 kids in the hunt they won't be left out I have small creme eggs and small caramel eggs and kinder eggs to go around). I will also have a golden egg prize and I won't say what that prize is. you just have to wait and see.

6pm the free raffle will be held. there is only 1 prize for this and this prize is shown on the front page (Hip flask that has the niwild and logo on the front of it).


I will have the campfire lit about just after the free raffle. don't want to light this fire to early to give the people in newcastle the opportunity to ring the fire brigade. This shouldn't happen anyway because I have camped in donard last month and lit a campfire and no fire brigade turned up.
The only reason last year easter camp they came was because the day before there was a forest fire.

There's enough snow to make it pretty but it'll not give us any problems camping.

I should be there around 4ish with at least 1 kid, but possibly 4. Can't stay overnight though.

Wee hannah had a brilliant time at the camp this evening, she really wanted to stay all night but ithought it might be a bit too cold for her, maybe next time. She loves her star prize for finding the golden egg, and it well pleased at also winning a camping stool and glow sticks. Thanks to everyone who helped organize the camp, karma all round.

Great craic last night a really good wild camp Toms well chuffed with his easter eggs and of coarse Auld Lucky Lumps here wining the nifty wee hip flask (can ditch the plastic smack bottle) made my night.  Nice one Doctor Who for puttin in the time and effort well done. ;)

I'd say you were right Kyle to let 'Yak use it since I wouldn't like to have seen the results after you used a saw as an "axe"  :P :D

Nice to see the pics people, I must say it has been hard to sit in this weekend knowing there were lots of forum members out all over the mountains.
