Title: A year with NI Wild.
Post by: Rumblebum on January 02, 2013
So there goes 2012 and i think i havnt done too bad for getting out and about in the hills.

Many of my trips were enjoyed along with members of the forum, others trips were helped with the advice and guidance of you guys which was appreciated.

Thinking roughly on what trips ive enjoyed it would be something like this,

Climbed Irelands highest mountain Carrauntoohil
Walked and camped the Moyle Way
Walked and camped the Mourne way
Completed the Mourne 7 7's
Attended the Easter, Halloween and Christmas camp and explored Percy Besche cave.
I got quite a few summits bagged too when i camped on top of Slieve Commedagh, Slieve Muck, Slieve Bernagh, Slieve Binnian,Slieve Meelmore and Hen Mountain.

Im Pretty darn happy with that, so howd the rest of you guys get on?

That's not bad when you put it altogether, not bad at all.  You forgot Hen Mountain though.  Mine looks quite like yours, strangely ;D

-  NI Wild Halloween and Christmas camps at Annalong forest (new location for me)
-  A Donard forest overnight (still a great location)
-  Moyle Way (tramp and camp)
-  Summit camps on Slieve Commedagh, Slieve Muck, Slieve Bearnagh, Slieve Meelmore, Slemish, Caer Caradoc (England)
-  Day walks to include at least 17 new tops for me in the Mournes, Antrim Hills and Co. Kerry
-  Mournes 7 7s - a first for me
-  A couple of days boating and camping in the Erne waterways

It was quite a nice amount, just enough to leave the desire for more and not too much so as to get bored at all.  Something similar in 2013 would be great.

Last year was a pretty busy one for me. Started working full time as an outdoor instructor which had me up on the hills quite a bit, also got my bro into hillwalking. Did very little paddling only on Castlewellan lake with groups. Although did a bit of surfing and canoed on Lough Erne and camped on Trannish.
Went to Minnesota in June which was pretty epic, although ate like a horse.
started running and Entered into a 5k in September, tried Coasteering, partook in many glamps, Easter and Christmas and Chimney rock summit camps. Smashed my nose whilst bouldering on bloody bridge and broke my toe. I also started up climbing at the end of the year. My resolution was to conquer my fears and I certainly did that as heights was one of them.
This year will be to bag more mountains, do more climbing and generally stay fit.

Oh man now I feel bad. I had two summit camps in 2012 that I can remember, Binnian and Commedagh and almost no day walking. It was a slow and lazy year, I'll have to try a bit harder in 2013  :o

Let me see...

-Caurrantoohil & Caher(First Munro)
-Donard (A first)
-Commedagh (First summit camp)
-Bearnagh summit camp
-Started climbing
-Christmas camp
-Cycled 80 miles around the North Coast
-Witnessed Big E's shocking revelation into the world of Boil In The Bag Rice

And in 2013 I'm going to try get some mountains ticked further afield now I have a wee bit of spare money.
I could also be persuaded into completing something like the 7x7's. Oh and most important of all is to try to find a way of making money so I actually have free weekends to do all these things.

Busy year for me, did much more than i could have hoped home, here's my highlights:

- 67 trips into the Mournes of some sort (have yet to work out no of summits)
- 10 camps (including 2 glamps and 2 bivvies), visited many more but unable to stay overnight
(only 3 summits camped - Binnion, Hen, Slievenamuck)
- Cracked Donard in an hour
- Climbed right up through Cove cave
- Walked 2nd half the Mourne Way (the 1st half is boring anyway  8) )
- Did my first outdoor rock climbs (well first in over 20 years)
- Did some high peaks outside NI (Snowdon, Ben Macdui & my biggest yet, Cima Delle Pozette at 2132m - mostly by cable car  :) )
- Week in Cairngorms for winter skills course
- Sampled Eds cooking  ;D
- and finally on my last trip of the year i did the Devils Coachroad.

not that many of the above were done with ni-wild, but sure you know me, i'm such a loner  ::)

I had a fantastic year and made some great new mates, walked half the mourne way, walked the moyle way, camped on bearnagh, took part in the 7 7s, (well was walking down bearnagh while it was on  ;D) went to the Christmas and Halloween camps, along with various trips to annalong wood and various walks in the mournes, all washed down with various huge steaks and a couple of litres of jack Daniels!  ;) thanks to all my ni wild mates for all the craic, looking forward to more of the same in 2013! My aim is to walk as much of the ulster way as possible, we will see how that goes! ;D

It's a bit hazy, but I definitely got a bivvy in on Doan, and out by Helen's Bay with Oisin , and up on the big binnian summit camp!.
Climbed my first outdoor route on Eagle Rocks but unfortunately never got out the rest of the year to expand on it.
Spent the weekend kayaking, coasteering, and climbing sea-stacks out in Donegal.
Was introduced to mountain biking in Tollymore and Donard.
Otherwise did a lot of running...
Mourne Way Ultra
Seven Sevens (hurt the most)
Mourne Mountain Marathon
Causeway Coast Ultra!

This year will have a lot more running and mountain biking. I may get some more bivvies, treks or a few days away in the summer.

*edit - seems I missed a few things! It all seems so long ago...suppose it was a year ago  ;D

I've had a fairly busy year alright, but an amazing one too. This is the first year I really got into the outdoors: did the Mourne Mountain Marathon, did Dublin Marathon, did half marathons in more towns than I care to remember.

I had my first summit camp the night before the 7/7's "we're not the checkpoint" lol! Did a bit of wild camping here, there and everywhere.

Did the Mourne Way 10k and camped around Rostrevor which was awesome.

Walked the Camino De Santiago in Spain. Beautiful experience altogether.

Did my first bit of climbing late in the year too.

All in all a brilliant year! .... But not as good as the one to come!

Actually meant to say fair play to Liam for cracking Donard in an hour.... I remember reading his reports with excitment! This one is getting added to my New Year list!
