Howdy there possom pickers!
Quite encouraged by the success of the climbing evening I was floating the idea if anyone wanted to learn a bit of self-defence in Belfast some evening?
I know I've a bit of a cheek as it's technically not an outdoor pursuit but martial arts and self-defence have always been my first love.
I've been involved in martial arts in some way since I was 12 and being just short of 30 have in my time boxed, kick-boxed, done Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, Wing Chun Kung Fu and generally tried just about every martial art under the sun.
At the moment I'm studying Krav Maga in Belfast. For those uninitiated Krav Maga is a system of unarmed and armed combat that's taught to Isreali Special Forces.
Over all the time I've spent at the martial arts I've learned there are no real secrets, no quick fixes and there is no "ultimate art". Proficiency at defending yourself comes from learning and practicing simple techniques over and over again. Drilling and practice will eventually lead to a level of skill though.
The idea is if anyone is interested to get a group together to practice, exchange ideas and training methods.
I want to state from the start that I am not an instructor, there will be no money involved and this is just a group of friends meeting up to train together.
I can however show people some simple techniques for defending themselves: as I'm sure there are people who can teach me some interesting stuff.
If anyone's interested post on the forum here and if there's enough interest we'll see about getting something sorted in the New Year.

Possibly, but can't really see getting to this. I'll keep an eye on the thread none-the-less.
Tai Chi is my thing, but I'm well out of practice after 7yrs of good progress :-[

Love to learn a bit of Tai-Chi myself .... someone once taught me some Chi-Gong breathing exercises and I still use them now and then when life gets a bit too much! .... Keep an eye on the thread!

I'd be interested in this as well, i have no martial arts experience whatsoever but i'd be willing to give it a try, i'll keep an eye on the thread and see what happens.

Brilliant! Sounds like we're on the same page! We now have ourselves a wee group ;D
Krav is pretty good, like anything I suppose it's what you put into it. Head there every Tuesday night if you ever fancy trying it.

That's brill.... hopefully we'll get a few more people on board. If we do was thinking we'll see what experience /abilities there are and can mix the class up a bit: if the likes of yourself or others want to do a bit of fitness/ spar/ roll then they can do that and if there's beginners etc we can take them for a bit of technique work: show them some basics.
Hopefully we'll get a few on board!

Excellent Speciman Yak .... the idea is to get a load of people with varying experience so we'll definately be able to show you some stuff!
Even if it's just a few of us it'd be good! looks like we're getting a bit of interest so I'll start thinking about locations
