A few of us are heading for a summit camp on Meelmore this Friday, we will be heading up around 8 and leaving at around 9 the next morning but if you fancy get this one ticked of your list then give us a shout.
Cheers
-
Are you having breakfast on the hill or dining at the lodge next morning? just in case i'm passing 8)
-
Have a good one lads, I'm working all day sat from early so won't be able to make it! :(
-
Dam, i'm working in the house ;-(
But, ill see what i can do ;D
-
I might be able to join you. Are you intending to camp or bivvi, considering that the summit is quite rocky.

Last time we summit camped Meelmore (http://www.ni-wild.co.uk/blog/2011/01/slieve-meelmore-summit-cam/) inside the wall the ground was too thin to get tent pegs driven in and outside the wall was too windy. We had to drop to the Meelmore/Meelbeg col.

I think il have my standard porridge pot mate, then i was talking to Graeme and in the morning we might head back to the car via spelak as we havnt really walked much over there.
You never know, a coffee in meelmore lodge might be on the cards.
-
I'm tenting, I don't have a bivy bag (or the inclination if I'm honest ;)), albeit the weather is looking pretty favourable at the moment. At least that may mean that the tents won't have to be clinging to the wall.
I know the ground seems to be a bit of an issue up there, I'm clinging on to the fact that Liam has had a tent up there before.
-
yes indeed ;D but had to search around to find a spot with enough soil to hold a peg and not too much sheep poo :(

don't think i'll be meeting up for breakfast, lot to do on saturday with the run in annalong, might have to taxi a few peoples down
-
Loving your bunting Liam.
-
I think I will go with the bivvi option. The forecast looks fine for it and I will probably be walking in from Newcastle so a lighter pack is welcome.
Have firelog will travel!

MMmmm My internet weather is giving me perfect summit weather :)
UTV news weather just said its to lash :-\
Aye Frank scared me there with all his doom and gloom, mind you he did basically say that they don't have a clue what will happen!! All the online websites: BBC/UTV/Met Office have the weather as ok.
And by the way this thread has taken a concerning direction :o

Its all RB's fault! He told Fred to smoke his meat on Commedagh, Im scarred for life :P
"We didn't start it." "Yes you did, you invaded Poland."

How can it look so different from the same apparent angle?
Looking back looks more positive.

Possibilities on the other side of the wall?

We'll find somewhere for tents and we can always spend the evening where ever is most comfortable for sitting around, if that is different.
Sorry to take it back on topic :P
-
I'd planned to make this camp, but my new line manager seems to just copy rota's from one week to the next. ::)
means i can't do the Annalong camp either as i'am working all day saturday.
-
I remember RB asked me to hold his banana once on Bearnagh, I think Ed has the photograhic evidence.
-
This sounds like a campfire story and a half..

Right that's flippin it!!!
I had also heard Liam that you'd once asked Dave if you could have a look at his Pocket Rocket, you'd heard rumours that it was small but very effective????? :o :o
-
You guys are disturbed, I cant believe that Im going to spent a night in the wilderness with you!
On Meelmore, no one can hear you scream ;D
Back on topic though, I was surprised by last nights weather forecasts but Im optimistic about conditions tonight.

Lol :) what you didn't realise it was a concept model that was only small when cold but once it heats up( which requires pumping like a multifuel stove) it increases vastly in size.
ha haaaaaaaaaa ;D

will you lads be comparing your "cooking utensils" to see who performs best 8)

rumbly says its not the length of your spoon that counts ::)

what a night to be out. as i cant take part due to my knee can we have photo`s. how hard or easy is the walk up to the xmas camp as chloe really wants to go and is pleading with me to go
-
It's an easy walk, but steep up the lane from car park but after that its grand, after seeing you (and Chloe) doing bearnagh this will be no bother to u both! :)
-
It would be no problem gaz,10-15 mins on a lane, then a even trek beside the forest.
-
wow, what an amzing starry sky it is out there, had hoped for a last minute summit attempt but had to go pick kids up from school play >:( enjoy the night lads, don't freeze ;D
-
How was it last night lads? Must of been a cold one.
-
Yeah man it was a real peach of a night, friggin cold though lol, as you know yourself.
Thanks for a great time lads! :)
-
Good on ya lads !!
well done ;-)
-
It was a great night but oh so cold on the summit. Im totally converted to firelogs for summit camps.

A cracking night under the stars. I was really looking forward to this one, especially when the weather forecast was looking so favourable. We were all pretty buzzing when we arrived at the car park and looked at the top of the mountain and the sky above it.
It was a cold night all right; that was part of the fun though. The view was great watching sunrise and the Bearnagh Slabs looked really impressive from Meelmore.
Cheers to Typo-on for helping me out when I was making such a mess of putting my tent up :)

It's always good to come home and warm up again. The only problem is that I've been a bit of tube and have run out of heating oil this evening. I sit in in my primaloft coat for the second night in a row as I type this :-[
-
Great photos, the tent with Orion in the sky is fantastic, looks like a grand night.
-
Man it makes me sad looking at them pictures while im painting and papering the house for xmas :'(

-
Thanks for posting the photos guys.
Looks like you had a good clear night.
So, how cold is cold up there?
Has anyone ever taken a reading on a cold summit camp?

I'm not too sure how cold it was, I think it was -4, -5, though It was so cold that it murdered my I phones battery in no time. Great night though.

Ditto my camera battery.
Mate should you edit the title on the first post of this thread to add "Meelmore" before"Summit Camp" so that if anyone is searching the forum for some ideas of where to pitch, this thread may help them out?
-
After reading this post and looking at the pics I am now sticking this on my list of summits to camp on, looked cold but thats half the fun!
