Title: Toughguy
Post by: Rusty Madra on October 30, 2012
Howdy Campers!

Spurred on by managing to complete Dublin Marathon there on Monday I've lost the plot totally and entered an event called Toughguy in January. If anyone else fancies doing it I'm definately heading over!

Also I'm quite interested in any training tips anyone has if they've entered any similar events? There's the obvious trail running as a staple but interested if anyone has any other ideas on how to train for an event like this one!

Hi, I did tough guy years ago. One training method I used was sand dunes and sea. I went up to the north coast and ran up the dunes then straight down into the sea swam for 50 strokes then back out up the dunes and back down again. It is tight I can tell you but in jan the cold is a night mate at tough guy they had to break ice in some of the water hazards. Hope this helps!

Cheers for the input. As far as I can see the individual elements needed in training are
*Cardio Fitness
*Strenght (Body Weight Exercises)
*Basic Climbing Skills
*Swimming
*Trail Running

I know I'll have to work on exposure to cold and heights tho!

Mostly I think alot of it will be in the mind. Overall I think there's no better training than running about the Mournes  :) Let you know how I go!

Training is going well... been doing regular runs and adding a few circuits into the mix. Feeling strong for it.

Having researched a bit the single biggest factor that puts people out of the race is hypothermia.... 600 people got pulled

I've tried to train for this by putting on a blast of only cold water when I'm in the shower for a few minutes and also by having Ice baths after long runs (these both incidently I'd recommend to anyone: you fairly know you're alive after them!)

Going to take NI Survival Schools advice and go to the beach for some rocky style training montages in the cold water.

Anyone got any other ideas on how to cold-proof myself?

The rock pool at portrush, just up form the salmon fishery is a great place. There use to be a diving board there years and years ago. So you can jump from about 20 foot on the rock face into the nice cold sea and pull yourself back up on top of the rocks (it can be hard BTW) it would be a good place for you to do a bit of trainning mate.
