Well I'm easy for the Friday or Saturday, I thought the Friday might have been a bit easier for people as they'd then have the rest of the weekend to themselves.
I'd thought about Annalong wood for this one?

Does anybody know what animal goes Arr Arr Arrrrooooo? 8)

Annalong Wood is the sensible option, secure parking, little distance to cover, a fair few places to pitch and a load of timber for burning.
Title: Re: Halloween
Post by: LennyJ1 on September 21, 2012
The reason I said Saturday is because in November if you get out of work at 5 it will be pitch black buy 6. If we go on Saturday we could go during the day and fit in some other activity like bushcraft or climbing?

I'm easy what night it is, should we put it up for a vote then?  I'm just aware that when we try to fit in too much then the plans go pear shaped. ::)

Make it Saturday, we could have a fancy dress party for the wains, apple dunking, candy apples and pumpkin carving..
For the adults, spicy pumpkin soup and lots of spiced apple cider..

I will probably give it a go myself depending on which weekend it is. Having no kit, I'm going to have to spend a bit of money. What is the easiest food to bring considering I have nothing to cook with?

It's probably worth throwing in that camping at this sort of time of year can be a bit uncomfortable depending on how cold or wet it is, sometimes a first outing when it's chilly and with new gear can be a bit of a kicking, doubly so if it's a first camp too.

Here's a few kitlist threads from times gone by that might be of interest:

Think it depends on how comfortable you like life to be :) As long as you're well prepared, year round in NI is totally doable. If this was a summit camp then caution would be sensible but a camp in a forest reasonably close to the car shouldn't be a problem as long as you have plenty of warm, waterproof clothes, a decent tent and warm sleeping bag. My caution is generally more to make sure people don't come out once and put themselves off camping for life because of a "surprise" experience than anything else. After all, loads of us still bivvy at the Xmas dinner :D

I'm in. Though I'd like to do something Halloween themed. Not sure what though. Climbing at night at Halloween sounds like the start of a horror movie, I'll be avoiding that :P

I initially thought I would be up sort of late, but now it looks like I could be up earlier. I'm going to have the kids (unless the weather is terrible) so was thinking about doing something that might keep them occupied.
I really like the idea of a little climbing or something but one of them is to small ATM so was thinking something bushcrafty.

Does anyone fancy doing something? We could do firelighting, shelter building etc.

Ideas welcome

Please note.. If adults wish to dress up I would like to request that they refrain from dressing as Freddy Kruger, Michael, jeepers creepers, slender man, chainsaw massacre, scream, or that dude from Saw.. Oh and any type of clown.. Muchos

Lets face it, Annalong wood is not the best place for kids or pitching tents, It full of s**t everywere. and it so far out of the way, Only good if you got a car, We dont all drive. I think donard woods is a much better place for this as there is more flat ground and easyer to get to for some people. Just my two cents.

Donard Wood is hard to get to for smaller children, more complicated to get to in the dark, just as messy as Annalong and we can't be sure if we light a fire that someone wont come and make us put it out. Annalong Wood on the other hand is easy to get to both during the day and at night for all ages, doesn't have firelighting issues and when we were up last Spud had a really good clear around and carried all the rubbish down so it's nowhere near as littered. It is bumpier for tents but it's a sizeable forest, I can't imagine we wont get everyone pitched okay.

It is a bit further out the coast road but it's a small price to pay for all the benefits. I'm sure with all the people going someone could squeeze you into a car.

I liked annalong woods, Don't get me wrong, Just not best for tents. When I said S**T I was not talking about rubbish, There is sheep poo everywere.

But I will be getting a bivy, So that should sort my problem out.

I will try and make it this camp.

i ll hopefully make this one weather permiting as im bringing a couple of kids this time (might need a larger tent)
A best in show pumpkin contest might be fun for the kids .
i was up at percy byshee caves recently and  either in the morning or early evening we cud take the kids up for a halloween geo cache and if someone was to conceal themselves beforehand inside it might give them a halloween scare ,or is that just mean? :P
if not a few sparklers and candy apples might just be good!

Wow, just realised it's been a really long time since i've been on the site and even longer since i've camped out. I'd be up for Annalog Wood, having never camped there and i'm itching to get out somewhere. I'd be up for some bushcrafty stuff earlier in the day, been wanting to make an A-frame chair for a while. I don't drive so getting there is the only problem for me so if i could cadge a lift from Belfast from someone it would be much appreciated. :)

Hi Swifty, youl probably find that the Halloween plans will get firmed up more the week before the camp, any suggestions that you have feel free to through them in.
I think if we are all arriving at different times then it might be best to just cook our own food rather than try to do it as a group, but then again I could be wrong  ;)
It's a really good opportunity to meet the gang and have a little night under the stars.

I dont think I've ever been in Annalong wood so it will be new for me plus a good catch up is in order. Looking forward.

Wonder if my skin is still on the roof of the cave. I think I've been in every possible bit of that cave now, even the bits you really shouldn't be in. I had to get pulled back out by the feet on one part  :-[ but i guess that means I'm qualified to show where you can go. How old is you nephew? I hope it stays dry for this.

We need to clarify:

1) Who's going
2) Who's bringing kids & what age
3) What halloween type stuff are we actually going to do

It's only a few days away, everyone please reply with confirmation that you're going plus answers to questions above and suggestions on halloween child friendly hijinks we can be getting up to.

It's dough on a kebab stick. I was shown how to make them at the weekend.. It wasn't just about staying at the Radison.
Self raising flour and water and salt
Kebab sticks soaked in water
Raisins, chocolate, cranberries, cinnamon, sugar.
Mix flour with Water and a pinch of salt in a bowl until you get a dough consistancy(add filling) roll into long thin sausage shapes and wrap round the kebab stick and then place close to the fire and cook whilst occasionally turning them. They take about ten mins to cook.
Great for both adults and kids and depending on the filling you can have them sweet or savoury.

This is Bannock and is delicious. I can highly recommend adding a good dash of Southern Comfort, maybe not for the kids though :)

It's dough on a kebab stick. I was shown how to make them at the weekend.. It wasn't just about staying at the Radison.

my advice would be to bring a small shovel, we lifted pretty much all the big stuff that we could see, really just smaller pieces of glass and sheep cr*p left up there, also there is a good amount of fallen trees, so someone should bring a bowsaw, im looking to make this camp, but not 100% certain re work etc yet!  :(

I'd be up for heading down earlier and lending a hand clearing up  if i could ask you for a lift there, really want to make the camp but transport is my only problem. It would just be me and a largish backpack. :)

I'm going for sure, might be a tad zombified though. I've a 12 hour stay away on the friday night, 8pm to 8am with my youth club, so a few hours kip in the morning and then pack the kit. Is anyone bringing a hammock/shelter? I'd love to try one before I fork out to buy one. Should I bring my halloween mask? Its a bit freaky...

The apples hanging from a branch (or a walking pole) is what I'd thought of too.

I'll be there with a 7 year old.  No idea what time we are heading down just yet, will probably do something with the rest of the family around home before heading.  So late afternoon at the earliest.

Sounds like it is going to be cold.

PP and glycol, what's that? Usually some paper and kindling is more than enough.
