I think it's fair to say we all enjoy a day in the hills ;D my only problem is i'am never out enough ;D anyway following some of my recent trek i've noticed so much litter on the mountain side,of course more popular routes,ie Donard are the worse & indeed i've never seen as much rubbish at the NI-WILD,Christmas camp site.
It appear's no one's going to lift it,no ones going to repair the wall,clean out the summit shelters!Now i know it's not our fault,& all the folk on this forum have a respect for the hills,but if anybody would like to put there names forward for some clean -up it would be really great,think this about sums it up
" I'm only free Sunday's but I'd be up for helping out. The general idiocy of such things makes me sick, but I know doing something about it, no matter how small, does make you feel better (temporary though the result may be "( twenty clicks )

I will be spending Friday cleaning this site.
I plan to then meet you all somewhere near the Hares Gap and head for Bearnagh.
I'm bringing lots of bin bags. Ed may be able to join me.

My company does this sort of thing once a year, but we always engage with Tidy NI and the Council who can help with bin bags and trailers to collect the rubbish in
Just a thought for assistance...

Its important to get someone involved who has vehicle access near the site, saves a lot of carrying, a full bin bag is a nightmare to carry on a windy day, would probably burst open. Also they may provide some good quality bags. Also i often wonder if its worth cleaning up the campsite at donard forest, if it was a mess they may not be so keen to camp there, although they would probably move to another spot and mess that up too :( its the broken glass that i hate most. Either way, i'm in :) .

Yes, I'm happy to be involved.
It'll act as a release for the frustrtaion when I see all the crap that's left about the hills.
Like already has been muted before I believe that Duke of Ed and similar can play a very influential role in dealing with this blight on the countryside. There ought to be more emphasis on how their presence and behaviour in the hills can effect others.
Supervisors should visit the sites when used by such groups and ensure that they are left in better condition than found. I hope that some D of Ed folks are reading this.
Rubbish bags need to be realistically strong to withstand being carried off the hills.
I'll keep an eye to this thread for further info.

When I take groups up into the hills I am always on their back about leaving no trace. When I have DOFE groups camping I would always check the camp after to make sure there is no rubbish left behind, I just wish other leaders would do the same.

If I left black bin bags at the 3rd bridge, can anyone pick them up? I have no idea what permission you need to drive up there. Liam is it something you have to be a MMRT member to have that privelage?

The gate is closed at the third bridge so you would need to walk down with the stuff. I was up there today and the rubbish that was there from yesterday was picked up. The MHT was working on the path and must have lifted it when they finished working.
Took a group down the new MB trail, it is pretty hairy on foot, god knows what it would be like on a bike.. Bit of rubbish there too from plastic energy drink bottles being thrown down. Grr

So no way of getting the rubbish down as opposed to carrying it all the way down?

If the bottom two gates are open you could park your car at the third gate and walk up to the camp.

You would need permission from the forestry, MMRT only have the one key and i wouldn't be able to borrow it just in case they needed it for an emergency elsewhere, MHT must have a key too so i reckon best thing to do is bring rubbish to the top (3rd) bridge and phone them to arrange collection (assuming they had previously agreed to do so).

Hold off until I get the go a head from MHT, they seem very keen to work along side us to clean up the areas.

Bumped into a chap out walking today,got chatting as you do ::),guess what he works as ??? a stonemason ;D & he's willing to give up a few days to help with wall repairs,i'll keep yous posted
