I got a rather fun Fathers Day gift of a Trekmakes flameless heating mug (more info here (http://www.flamelesscook.com/)). I've not tried it yet but it's an interesting idea. You put a "thermal pad" in the bottom of a cup, add 40ml of water, then slip in a stainless steel sleeve and fill that with your drink, then close and leave for 7-12mins. The thermal pad reacts with the water outside the sleeve and heats up which in turn heats the water inside the sleeve. It's a cool idea but I've yet to try it in the field (or on the hill!).
The only thing I did notice was the replacement heat packs (you get 3 with the cup) cost £10 for 7 on the Trekmates website, I'm hoping they're significantly cheaper elsewhere!

Cool, fire me through whatever you have. I'm generally against this sort of "disposable" cooking. Gas cans are fairly unavoidable but I don't really like producing heat through chemical reactions, not sure why, it just doesn't sit well. But, that said, if it saved carrying a flask on a cold day then I suppose it might be worth it.
I knew someone would end up with one of these :-\ :) The problem I see with them is once you start it there is no stopping it unlike normal fuel so if you just want a little water you waste a pack.
Ive a bit of info about them I'll pm you about ;)

So if these 'thermal pads' are sitting in your rucksack, and get wet because of the rain will your bag become hot? Or are they secured in some sort of fashion that water doesn't touch them? Until you need it I suppose.

They're individually sealed in a plastic pouch.

hmmmmm, wonder if these could be used to invent the self-drying coat, or the self-cooking coat :o
