Was having a flick through a magazine in easons as you do! and article caught my eye. Basically some guy had coast to coasted it across scotland and used an extremley cheap tent from argos called the "tiger paws". This tent has now after a couple of years been re released and renamed (Pro Action Hike Lite 1 Person Tent, not quite as cool a name as the tiger paw!) Anything I've read online and in mags cant seem to praise this little tent enough comparing them to terra nova etc and whats even better is their only 25 quid in argos!
I'm gonna treat myself to one tonight I'll take a few pics etc and let you know what my first impressions are.
Here's a link to the argos website

jst bought one and stuck it up in the garden and I must say i'm very impressed. It has a small pack size and is light with aluminium poles. I think if a I store the poles outside the bag I could use the compresion straps to acheive an even smaller pack size. The tent itself is roomy enough for 1 and a rucksack if yours doesnt fit in the porch. Some reviews say two could fit in it but they'd have to be VERY close friends! the materials and manufacturing quality seem fine, the fly sheet uses buckles to secure to the ground sheet and adjust tension. All in all I think £25 is amazing value for what seems like a very good tent and from what i've read i'm not wrong. I'm in the mood for camping now!

Hi Chris,
I was looking at this myself. As A tarp and bivvi kind of guy I was interested in the pack size and quality of this tent as I want to get some overnights in the inner Mournes do you think this little guy would be up for the challange?
-
I got the Vango Banshee 300 which is essentially the same tent but bigger. I've not used it much but it seems solid. Only thing to watch for is a lack of headroom, no porch and can't pitch as one. That said, for £25 you can't go wrong as long as it keeps you dry!
-
I think this would be ideal, I havn't had a proper camp in it as yet just pitched it in the garden and I could see no probs with head room. I could sit up comfortably in it no probs dressing inside etc. dont get me wrong its not a palace but its not tiny.
Other than that any reviews I've read say there are no leakage condensation etc probs associated with this tent all in all it seems Pro Action have made a bomb proof tent that can compete with the best!
Jono dont know if you've seen the review but a very simple conversion can be carried out on the porch flap with the the spare guy line and a walking pole to fashion a tarp like area for storage, cooking etc. I might try this at some stage depending on how wild i'm feeling!
The only down sight i can see it you might not like the colour but personally I love it, Reminds me of my dads old force 10!

If you have a look over at the outdoorsmagic forum, they champion this tent every time it comes out on sale. My friend bought one and used it for the couple nights he joined me on the ulster way. It isn't the greatest finished tent and you can see that by better specifecation that the tent could be a lot better and possibly lighter, but for the £25 its going for in the sale it is a bargain, and a lot of tent for the money. I don't see why it wouldn't take the morunes in its stride, as long as its tail is pointed into the wind, especially seeing as it is pretty much a clone in design of other good tents, i.e the MSR Zoid which I previously owned.
A review of the tent, plus a lot of other interesting stuff can be found on Richards blog:

I took one of these to rathlin last weekend. Seemed to tolerate the strong winds there ok and will still up when I got back to it. I found it easy to put and and a good height to kneel in and get changed in. Bargin for £25.
I kinda thought i would be handy to throw in the kayak. It packs down smaller than my sleeping bag!!
Still miss my big vango though however this is a good choice for not being able to carry so much, I'm only ickle and i had no car last weekend so big tents were definately out!!

Having seen this tent in action I really wish I had got one while the were on offer >:(
Great bit of kit and a crackin price.....maybe next time.

-

Buy one and let the missus kick you out for a couple of nights to let her cool, then you get the tent and get to try it out at the same time without her phoning you every five minutes and asking when you are coming home. ::) :D :D
-
Surely its worth a chance at £17.99, I know I have spent more than that on fast food take aways
-
It is the same weight as the hilleberg soulo which costs £410, can it be put up in 3 mins 40 sec,s like the hilleberg ? i might buy up just to bliz it with everything to see how long it last as its only £18 ;D
-
Must say I can't fault it for the money as I had mine at the Mournes trip ,its so easy to erect ,not a massive weight to carry and when used there wasn't a drop of condensation inside and to mention there is loads of room. Like all things at these prices you can't look too closely (such as the stitching) as you will be able to pick out flaws.
I think it ticks most of the boxes for kit on a budget without compromising on weight to a degree.
Mine was bought on a whim as I was in the process of buying a good lightweight 1-2 man tent and when I seen it thought I would take a chance.
We will see how it fairs at the weekend in the Antrim Hills as I haven't really had a chance to test it in the open under unfavourable conditions (not that I really want them but it was fairly sheltered in Donard Wood)

3mins 40 secs seems pretty slow. You can a actually wack this up in no time if thats what you look for in a tent.
-
I just reserved the last one in the city centre. Too good a bargain to pass up! I'll give it a testing at the weekend on Salt Island.

Job done! It packs down small if nothing else. I'll post a review and some piccies after the weekend.

Anyone any experiance with any of these 2 tents? my normal partner for the mmm is not doing it this year and we normally use his terra nova but looking at these 2 for this year.........
http://worldofcamping.co.uk/shop/gelert_solo_1_man_tent__1188
http://worldofcamping.co.uk/shop/coleman_rigel_x2_tent__1665
The second one is good and light only thing is there is no porch to put gear or cook...........
-
I used the 2 man gelert mongoose last year on the mmm and had no probs with it, took a bit of fidling around to get it taught so it was quiet while were asleep, porch space is minimal to say the least pretty much just shoe sapce but i've never really been into porch cooking. uI've also used it ob various trips and been pleased with it, loads of pocket sapce inside for various items. I know your talking about the 1 man but I'm assuming its the same only slightly smaller!
-
Thanks Chris im thinking of just going with the x2 when I thought of it i will prob stink more than my shoes.......lol and hopefully the weather will be as good as the last few years and there will be no need to worry about indoor cooking..........! also the weight of it is great for the value, gonna order one on monday will keep you all posted with a wee reveiw of how it gets on...!
-
cool beans, I'll know which tent to look out for then! I'll be the one tryin to cram two people into my bright orange pro action!
-
Haha X marks the spot............ have you took part past years? what cat placing?
-
That little x2 badboy looks great value for money, a decent waterproof value and pretty light weight for a 2 person tent.

My thoughts X actly................!!! and with a stuff sack im hopeing it will pack down well.............
-
Will have to look at its vitals a little closer , the details on your linked web site arn't really that clear on whether its single skin and it looks like they suggest it folds flat or something if you read the pack size :-\

Think it is single skin from what i read on a site that was a bit more expensive...............good call on the dimentions tho..........must go look further into that.......... ???
-
All I can say is my Pro-Action " You've been Tango'd" Hike Lite will have to do the job. Unless I'm feeling flush and splash out on a Terra Nova or similar
-
Just reading this very good review on the x2

Seems to get pretty good reviews overall and the point is that for the purpose ie MMM the price, weight and size fits the bill and as one reviewer stated "you shouldn't expect a hotel ".I suppose it's a get the head down for some rest and get up and go thing ;D
-
Mine arrived this morning, looks good.
