A teenage girl who died from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning at a campsite in Shropshire has been named locally as Hannah Thomas-Jones.
All four members of the family were found unconscious in their tent in Bucknell, Shropshire on Sunday morning.
The owners of the Baron at Bucknell campsite said a disposable barbecue used by the family on the first evening of their bank holiday break had been left in the porch of the tent.
Detective Inspector Gavin Kinrade from West Mercia Police said: "We are treating the girl's death as unexplained, but there do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances."
Site owner Phil Wright said: "They had gone into the tent and found them all unconscious. One of the sisters came and said, 'We need an ambulance urgently'.
"The emergency services were on the scene within five minutes. They worked on the girl for some time but they couldn't save her.
"It has been devastating. It is really tragic. Nobody has done anything wrong, they have just not realised the dangers of disposable barbecues."
The girl's death is believed to be the fourth linked with carbon monoxide from a barbecue in the UK in the past 12 months.
The most recent case is understood to be that of a six-year-old girl who died at a campsite in the New Forest at Easter, while in March, a 45-year-old man died after suffering carbon monoxide poisoning at a log cabin in the Lake District.
Last August a 34-year-old woman died at a campsite in Gwynedd. An inquest blamed carbon monoxide from a barbecue.

This is really sad and unfortunately a regular enough occurance in the news. I always wonder how this happens considering how well ventilated tents are.
-
I thought carbon monoxide was only created when the fuel was burned? Am I wrong on this? I read the disposable barbeque was unopened.
-
looks like it had been used
witnesses said a disposable barbecue was found inside the tent Sunday morning. Authorities believe they had either mistakenly used it to keep the tent warm or had believed it was extinguished.
The family, said to be seasoned campers, reportedly arranged three tents around a gazebo used for cooking and eating. The weather over the weekend was dry, but close to freezing. It's believed someone moved the disposable barbecue into the tent after dinner to keep warm.
As a rule of thumb, campers are urged to use disposable or portable barbecues far away from tents in areas with proper ventilation due to the potential rapid buildup of carbon monoxide fumes.

The warnings are on the products, stoves, BBQs etc. Although they might not be solely applicable to carbon monoxide, it's definitely for fire safety purposes.
I suppose like me that family thought they could get away with having the BBQ in the tent and nothing would happen. Sadly this is the result.
I'm definitely going to think twice before I cook inside my tent again.

It had been used, but according to BBC it was from the night before.
"There was a disposable barbecue which they had used the night before in the porch of the tent."

And another quote that probably answers my question:
"You don't realise that they are giving off fumes for hours and hours after you have used them."
So I dont think they have been using it in their tent, surely that would have burned through the groundsheet?
It makes you wonder how many people died like this hundreds of years ago when no one new about the invisible gas.

Makes me worry about my stove in our teepee. I keep it stoked all night! I think i will have to google for a small battery carbon monoxide alarm
