Fast forward too 2.08mins and thats a rough idea of an over night kit supply :D

Heard that one before adammcc5,cracker,but back to the question in hand is it really necessary to carry stoves,& the like for a quick over-nighter,reading over some Internet journals it appears about 10 -13 pounds is the maximum that should be carried,so that's the basic kit, pack, tent or tarp, bivi or bag, clothes(basically as per season)map,compass,water,food(1.5 lb per day )torch, batteriees( spares )matches or flint, phone, first aid kit, emergency bag, really just the essentials, forgave me as I've bound to forgot something, from now on I'll be weighting my kit on each outing
-
I think it depends on what your wanting to do.
I could go out with only a sleeping bag and lie in a field on a mild summers night. But then again I could carry a tent, water, food and extra clothes etc.
Entirely climate dependant. I'll adjust my kit according to the weather. I havent bit the bullet of weighing my kit yet, I just feel I'll pack what I think I need and if I dont use it then I'll know for next time.

If you have no access to a fire and you don't bring yer stove, what are ya gonna cook yer steak on? ;D
Like oisin says, depends what you want to be doing, I love to cook when in the hills, so will always bring a stove, fuel, plate etc and usually too much food! Would also have sleeping bag, SIM, tent, first aid kit, change of clothes and a tipple ;), and if no access to wood, a firelog!
I am never in too much of a hurry, so I dont mind a heavier pack, and it will always be lighter on the way home! ;)

Hard question too answer as there isnt a right and wrong answer. Weight and comfort go hand in hand, heavier pack usually makes for a comfier night with luxuries, less weight would then mean loosing some luxuries.
Location is a big part aswell for me, if i was camping in a forest then i would swap the tent for a hammack and tarp. I couldnt bring myself too not taking a stove though, no steak = no sleep >:(
-
for me its the distance i have to walk, so if camping in donard forest, i bring everything, if have to walk up to a summit i leave the folding stool behind :) actually i tend not to cook on summit camps so i just bring a sandwich up for dinner

its reaching the happy(comfortable medium) i'am looking for ::)

comfort begins at the campsite :)
i find the lighter the gear i buy i just fill the void with more luxuries
did i mention beer 8)

Liam's only joking - he had the folding stool on top of Commedagh as well :D
Entirely weather/location dependent. I often just bring food that can be eaten cold on an overnighter like malt loaf, frankfurters, pies, chocolate, nuts.
Here is an overnight kit list for last summer: my blog post (http://www.twentyclicks.co.uk/?p=275)
and a detailed list for 2weeks on the GR20: googleDocs (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AtD9_UwzQk3GdGZhT0xaRklnRnRrRnRLSVVwblpSLUE&hl=en_US)

2 bottles of buckfast, headache tablets, extra pair of gonks, just in case I have a accident :-[
-
Having never tasted buckfast wat i'am i missing, seems to be a bit of a thing on here the Auld buckfast
-
You have never tried buckfast? :o i think a steak and buckfast overnighter is required pretty soon

Looking over your list in more detail Matthew, on a light over nighter your carrying About 13 lbs & up to double that on a more prolonged(luxury)filled trip ;)
-
Do you not mean kg mourneman? ???
-
no grams to pounds -12669 g = 27.9303 lb for extra kit & 6021 g = 13.2740 lb for the lighter kit ::)
-
Thanks for that calculation ;D I always use kg when weighing mine but always see in different forums that people use lb's. Id have too admit that my over night kit is about 10kg or more :-X

On a very light overnight, I aim for 5-7 and for comfortable nights, it is around the 12 kg mark. My kit very seldom changes these days so ill rattle a more updated list off for people browsing.

It always looks like a nice lean set-up that Matthew has. You'd do well to use that as a starting base and put in the other things that you can't live without.

Drink any more than half a bottle and you'll be up all night from the caffeine. That's my experience with it anyhow. Though that's in a student house after sleeping most of the afternoon - maybe after a good hike it'd be another story!
