Title: The Ultimate Hobo Stove
Post by: Dowser on February 02, 2012
I was browsing about the web this morning looking for cool USB gadgets for the hills, now that my Solar USB Charger (http://www.ni-wild.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=2926.msg31406#msg31406) is complete, and I found this...

...It could very well be my next camping gear purchase:

Awesome idea. What weight though?

It's only 900g and you do not need to carry a stove, or fuel, or batteries etc etc.

Definitely my next purchase.  Think it will even take priority over my next Tesco food shop lol

Cool idea. Modern hobos can keep connected off the grid  8)

I think the best thing about this is that their main stove has been designed to address problems and needs in the developing world... this is a happy side line off the back of it. Good company!

So, how does the heat generate electricity?

Title: Re: The Ultimate Hobo Stove

So, how does the heat generate electricity?

Take yourself down to Kilroot Power Station and ask for a tour.

I wonder if the stove is water proof/resistant?
Title: Re: The Ultimate Hobo Stove

Well now I had no idea so thought I'd find out....apparently NASA has been using this tech for years...

Anyhoo, direct quote from http://www.tegpower.com/

thermoelectric generators are made from thermoelectric modules which are solid-state integrated circuits that employ three established thermoelectric effects known as the Peltier, Seebeck and Thomson effects. It is the Seebeck effect that is responsible for electrical power generation. Their construction consists of pairs of p-type and n-type semiconductor materials forming a thermocouple. These thermocouples are then connected electrically forming an array of multiple thermocouples (thermopile). They are then sandwiched between two thin ceramic wafers.  These thermocouples are then connected electrically in series and/or parallel forming an array of multiple thermocouples (thermopile). When heat and cold are applied this device then generates electricity. Almost any heat source can be used to generate electricity, such as solar heat, ocean heat, geothermal heat, even body heat!

So thats a whole lot clearer then... ???

Spoke to a couple of engineers that sit beside me, its thermocouplers.

Another bloke that sits beside me is a former power station employee. If I need to know about power stations I will just ask him.

Not many places got lasers.

I don't work with those that operate them, but I know where they are. Quite strict about access due to the obvious risks

They did.  Unfortunately the stove is still at the manufacture stage and the only way to get one is to visit their site and reserve one here (http://biolite.myshopify.com/?__utma=85435402.665172193.1328179321.1328615661.1328779913.4&__utmb=85435402.3.10.1328779913&__utmc=85435402&__utmx=-&__utmz=85435402.1328779913.4.4.utmcsr=google|utmccn=(organic)|utmcmd=organic|utmctr=biolite&__utmv=-&__utmk=156599922).

They are not doing any group discount at this time and the stoves are shipped on a first come first served basis.

I have reserved one but it seems it could be September, or later, before it is shipped  :(

So its still in the design stage.

I will wait on some of you to get one to see if it actually works.

So the money you are paying is to fund the development of the product in the hope that they actually get to manufacturing???

Sounds a bit strange to me.

They don't take any money until it is ready to ship.  If they are working on a small budget then they self finance a couple of hundred, sell them, and then use the proceeds to finance another batch and sell them too until they have enough money in the bank to go into full scale production.

Normal enough practice for a small design company that doesn't want to sell it's idea to a huge company and kiss goodbye to the rights.

I'm happy enough to be the NI-Wild Guinea Pig and if it doesn't work it will make a funky looking, futuristic flower pot  ;)

Well I have mine all reserved up and all but no expecting to hear anything for 2-3 months at the earliest to be honest....due out for US Camping Season 2012, which if I'm right is about May onwards?  Don't pay til it ships so not out of pocket yet!!!  I have to say, the four year old inside of me is screaming 'Is it ready yet? Can I have it now? Where's my stove!!'

All commend patience, but none can endure to suffer....

Am I excited or wot!!!

Just got my email and my shiny new stove, that charges my phone and usb speakers while I fry a sirloin and keep my extremities warm, is on its way.

Shipping date will be some time between 15th - 30th June  ;D ;D

And... Because I pre-ordered they are letting me buy two which I am going to do.  I'm sure somebody I know will want to get their hands on one.

In the mean time, while I'm waiting for my CampStove to arrive, apparently, I can take a moment to visit Biolite's new website at biolitestove.com (http://biolitestove.com/). Here I can find detailed product specs for the CampStove, instruction videos and stories from the field. I can also find Biolite team's accounts of their work developing clean cookstoves for communities around the world.

I can't wait to own one (Well, two) of these things!!!

Expected delivery date out of UPS Newtownabbey is the 11th June.  Like Hud I am well excited.

Soon as mine arrives I'm hoping to take it Island hopping in Strangford for a few days with my Canadian where hopefully it will power my iphone for music and ibooks for relaxing.

So eventually got around to given this article a whirl...stupid life and work getting in the way of gear testing  >:(

Anyhoo....popped it out of the bag, set her up and filled her with a few twigs from the back garden...

Lit her up with the handy firelighters Biolite also supply...

Switched on the fan and soon had a lovely wee flame going...
Good enough to charge the BB from

And saying I had the means, thought I'd make a quick brew...

All in all, good wee stove, burns very clean (the fan is very good at keeping it clean), good build quality, simpler than I expected to use and does exactly everything it sets out to do.  Wouldn't necessarily find its way into my pack every time I mosey off but definately a good investment as far as I am concerned (but again appreciate that others would be put off by the price)

Hud is a happy man!   ;D ;D

Where can I get one?

Hi Rory

They are only available direct from the manufacturer in Seattle at the moment.  If you go to the first post in this thread: http://www.ni-wild.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=2928.msg31425#msg31425 and click on the "Biolite" Logo it will take you to their home page.

Only Hud and I have one of these stoves and we were on a waiting list from February for ours.  They only arrived last week.

If your in a rush I'm sure Hud or I could be persuaded to part with ours for £300  ;D

Do they run while the fire is not lit? By that I mean does energy in it get stored etc..

Yes... they have a built in rechargeable battery which you could use to charge your phone whilst the stove is unlit or you are on the move and then charge it up again later that evening when your cooking your dinner.

Brilliant, how much in £ did you pay for it?
Title: Re: The Ultimate Hobo Stove
Post by: hud on June 19, 2012
Yea I reckon I'd let mine go for 300 quid too Dowser...!!!!

Further to Dowser's point Rory, the charger works even after you have put the fire out too...during my test I dumped the embers out and put them out with water, but the reisdual heat in the burner meant the fan kept going and the charger kept charging...so if you were on the hills and turning in for the night you could extinguish the fire and keep the old mobile on the stove to continue charging (for a wee while anyways!)

I have to say I am quite chuffed with it and know that I will use it on more 'luxurious' camping trips

The price you pay will depend oin the exchange rate....they are 129 USD plus shipping

I was thinking of my color-tv-matic  ;D

Wonder if you could run a small TV from this  8)

I use the TVcatchup app on my iPhone which picks up all digital channels so technically yes, you can run a small TV from it  ;)

If we're gonna watch the Euro 2012 on your Colour-tv-matic in the mountains then I think we are all going to have to club together and buy one of Biolite's really really big ones  ;)
