during the Mourne Way hike today there was talk of making an "NI-Wild way" round the Mournes, any suggestions?
I was thinking something involving a few peaks, doable in one day (just), and taking in as many interesting/remote/wild spots as possible (meelmore lodge ;D ) rather than just a long plod through the bogs
first suggestion would be start at meelmore lodge (with a fry), go to hares gap, shelter stone, down side of ben crom reservoir, at dam go up to the binnian/lamagan col, down to percy bysshe, then across top cove cave, up through the cave, over to slieve beg and down the devils coachroad, join the brandy pad and back to start point
next idea please :)

Sounds like a very interesting walk Liam, maybe just adding a wee scramble through the castles?

This is a fantastic idea, probably worth some proper consideration and a bit of polling.
How about people suggest the spots in the Mournes that they find the most interesting and we'll string the best ones together into a route. It could also be planned as sectional so different distances could be done.

if several routes are suggested you could have easy ,moderate, tough to cover all abilities

Sacrilege!! Bearnagh rocks, it's my favourite one.

I always loved walking from Trassey, over Luke, Slievenabrock, Shan Slieve and then Commedagh. Then either walk the Brandy pad or over the Pot of Legawherry back to hares gap.

is this the walk you were talking about Liam,it's 10.7 miles or17.2199 km,good walk that takes in most of the best view in the Mournes, but has very little steep walking

thats looks about right john, except maybe you didn't go up through cove cave? but that was just a first suggestion from an intoxicated state ;D i was trying to avoid the usual things people do in the mournes (such as the usual peaks, so you are safe from bearnagh ;) ), in fact putting the brandy pad in is probably a bit tame, would be good to have a section that required a bit of compass work in the night or mist.
so my list of possible places to visit
meelmore lodge, always a good start point for gather in extra calories for the long walk
newcastle, good end point for some apres ski in o'hares or the harbour inn
percy bysshe cave
cove cave
devils coachroad
ben crom shelter stone
castles of commedagh (maybe a scramble through them)
pot of legawherry (incorporating a scramble)
pierce's castle
doan
the granite trail (by the harbour at newcastle)

Keep me posted on the trial run of the picked routes. This is beginning to look awesome. All the best bits in one decent walk.

What about a permanent thread with walk contributions from any member that wants to, but to post a walk they have to complete it and take a few pics to whet people's appetite? They could have names, like "dowsers dander", "mournemans march", "Craigys cross country" "redleaders ramble" or even "Spuds Sunday stroll" ;D

The Marketing dept. of the NI Tourist Board are just off the phone with me. They don't think our tag-line is great "The NI-Wild Way - You only need visit once". Something about sustainable tourism....
