hopefully I will get flat ground this time. :)
-
I cant make this one mate as ive prior arrangements but wish you a good night, hope the weather holds out for ya.
Alan.
-
Unfortunately I need to save all my brownie points at the moment. Shame, I could do a night round the fire rightly.
-
I've been itching to get out camping, but saturday is a working day for me. And I have woodbadge training in crawfordsburn on the sunday morning.
Wish you all the best.
-
I was planning on heading up the mournes somewere as i had too put off last weeks trip. What time are you thinking of leaving at?
-
me and my bro will be at the camp spot by 2pm.
are you wanting to walk up with us or meet us up at the camp spot?
-
Il probably just walk up with you's if thats sweet? Were are you leaving your car parked? I was thinking about parking early at meelmore then hiking over to the camping spot?
-
we will be getting a bus from belfast to newcastle, and heading up from donard car park.
so if you want to walk up with us. meet us at donard car park at 11am, or we can meet you at the camp spot, between 1pm and 2pm because we are taking our time going up because we are taking photos.

I really, really want to join you guys but can't - my other half rarely gets a saturday off and when she does we like to spend it together. She isn't into hillwaking (yet!) *grins evilly* but I reckon I'll get her into it. Buying her initial gear and washing it after each trip (I actually love that part) oughta do it.
Do you usually get the bus down to newcastle from Belfast? Is it regular? I just assumed any time I'd be heading to the mournes I'd need a lift, never even looked into it!
Ed
-
yes you can get a bus from belfast to newcastle regularly.
just use this http://www.translink.co.uk/Journey-Planner/ (http://www.translink.co.uk/Journey-Planner/) to get times.
-
Were abouts in belfast you coming from? I live 5 mins from it now. Might even get the bus to cut out any hassle with parking the car
-

Ballynahinch or the carryduff stop sound like the best bet for me. Do you live in the city centre or you having to travel to europa? And what way are you planning on getting home?
-
I have to travel to the europa bus station. I just need to get a red bus for that. im getting the bus back again when heading back home.
and if you are getting the bus at ballynahinch or the carryduff stop, make sure you look out for the bus number 520, so you get the right bus.
-
No problem, and thanks for the bus advice, think il just get the bus at carryduff direction and walk up with you's. What sort of setup are you taking? I was for camping out in a tent but seeing you are going to a forest id say a hammock would be a better shout
-
we are using tents, best for this time of year.
:o you are using a hammock at this time of year. it be cold and might have some rain.
-
Hammock is the best night sleep there is ;) i have a banshee to break in so might take it. I was talking too someone last week who was camping last year in -16 in a hammock, thats extreme :o

I honestly dont think there is 'a best for' its just what suits the person. I dont see how you would be colder in a hammock compared to a tent and a tarp sorts the rain.
The hammock in my opinion is usually a tad warmer or else the the wine takes effect and i just imagine it. And yeah i forgot to mention that the tarp takes care of the rain. But they both have there advantages. I feel a debate happening shortly ;D

Debate is starting lol.
In a hammock, you have a rather large air gap between you and the ground so any slight breeze will sink heat away from your body making you cold. With a tent, you will generally use a roll mat or some form of insulation below you. Well that is what I found from my hammock adventures.
-
Thermarest in a hammock will sort a good part of that out although the wind can be a right pain. Plus what size of gap are you talking about? I bought 2 DD hammocks recently and the guy i bought them off has his down to perfection, he can get his with him in it to only about 8 inches off the ground :o i couldnt believe it when he told me. Anytime i have used them, they have been a lot higher
-
The gap I suppose depends on how high you position and to a degree; it is affected by the give in the material and the stretch in the lines holding it up. I always found getting the correct tension to be a tricky thing as too tight, it is just uncomfortable, too loose, and you legs end up cold as the blood runs out of them.
Any time I have tried a Thermarest in a hammock I have always slid off it, or it has held the hammock in a weird shape. Who knows, give it a shot and see. I hope that it all works out for you.
-
So is the camp still on for tomorrow night then?
-
As far as i know. Although i might head down to Ben Crom direction instead...decisions ::)
-
yes the camp is still on, you can join if you wish. me and my bro be there for 2pm, I would enjoy the company.
Adam no problems. but me and my bro will be going up donard to the camp spot.
so far the weather is holding out over saturday to sunday.
-
No problem matey, if i am heading down with you and your bro il just jump on that bus with yous tomorrow morning around carryduff direction, completely torn in the middle of both and cant make my mind up what to do ???
-
well you would have the company of us if your going the way we are going.
if your coming with us then I will see u on the bus, if not then I hope you enjoy ur day. ;D
-
Yes think i will just come with you's, the company is always good on trips :) see you bright and early all being well ;D
-
Good luck with your camp,Robert mate, remember to use the tinder ,the dry bracken for your fire
-

I dont think you should go out your front door lol. If you'd ducks theyd probably drown on ya!
Myself and Whorya got in the car and headed up to the mournes to do a walk of the silent valley and wee binnian etc, as soon as we got to castlewellan i told him to pull the car over, got out and puked everywhere, i felt awful so he ran me back home again, he then went back to the mournes again, thats devotion for ya!
I live in templepatrick so it was a real kick in the teeth for him drivin back and forward all day , i felt like a rite tube lol.
Theres the mourne way walk next week which will be good so your more than welcome to join us, some people cant do the two days so they are going to the camp on the saturday night and then walking sunday.
Wine will be consumed at the camp ;D

You forgot to mention stopping the car another ten times to puke. Mind you, I could cope with that, it was the motorway and Subway bag 'relationship' that was hard to take!
It was a shame, we had planned to blast up from Donard Park and catch up with the guys at the forest camp. Sounds like a bad day Adam, hopefully the other guys fared a little better.

what happened to you adam?
We went past carryduff on the bus, maybe you waited at the wrong stop, because nobody got on at the stop at carryduff.
Me and my bro had a great time, but took awhile to start the fire. alot of wet wood. but I found some good dry wood up in the thinker woods, which did keep the fire lit.
we are shattered now, after all that hard work. ;D
great night witht he wine round the fire. pity nobody showed up.
bit windy but our tents where fine.
-
I parked at the hill at the bottom of four winds and walked to the bottom of the saintfield road bus stop. I was there for 0914 thinking i would have a couple of minutes too spend but nothing turned up ??? there was a private bus that went past but that was the only one bar a downpatrick one about half an hour after, was properly gutted >:(

dry indeed, but very windy.
took us a while to get our tents up.
