some people say when camping they put heat padsin sleeping bags. what is thien name and where do you get them, may be handy for rucksack
-
Is it Grannys saying they use them? Whats next, electric blankets that run off a rechargable battery? :P
-
shows the forum works. read an article about sleeping bag with foot pouch for heat pack. but is probably another gimmick
-
This reminds of the heated clothing in Maplin :o
http://www.maplin.co.uk/search.aspx?criteria=Heated%20Clothing&menuno=0
Heated insoles
Heated gilet
Heated hat
Heated gloves
The majority of which are powered by a whooping 6 x AA's :D
They would take a fair chunk out of your weight allowance ;D

Are they run off batteries or is it like the gel hand warmers?
-
gel heat pads may be like charcoal hand warmers you can get

When camping, I have to boil water for the gf's hot water bottle.
She also brings blow up pillows. Have to admit i use one lol

I'd bring a blow up pillow, or at least improvise something from rolled up clothing. I get the worst tension headaches imaginable if I strain my neck muscles during sleep
-
I suffer from cold camping feet, but keep forgetting to bring a hot water bottle or my gel packs, i would certainley consider an electric foot warmer, but i would probably forget to bring it too :)
-
I used a sigg bottle with hot water in it once that worked a treat
failing that my dog is an excellent heat source but tends to smell a bit :-\
-
i started this chat to find out what others did as i dont have / cant afford a good winter sleeping bag and thought for £1-£2 i could heat the bag up a bit. think i`ll give it a go next time out
-
Good idea Scribble, will be trying that at the weekend. I would usually heat a pair of baselayers/socks/shorts close to the fire if iys really cold then stick them on just before i head to bed. Im sleeping before it even cools down
-
if your on a budget then just pee in a plastic bottle ;D
-
I've also heard that filling a Sigg with hot water is the business but I've always been too wary of it spilling or bursting.
How do the gel packs work, the ones that you snap to generate heat, I've been tempted by them a few times.

liquid Sodium acetate trihydrate is released when you snap it, and recrystalizes onto a solid "plate" inside the pack - the reaction is exothermic. Quite neat, but they don't last long.
My brother swears by doing 20 starjumps and 20 pressups before climbing into the bag - he's obviously never camped after a full day's hiking then

We'll leave it at that, and not mention some of the other techniques used with body waste. :D
