I went to an astronomy evening with Suspectmonkey a while back, wasn't in Delamont though. Was a great night but unfortunately cloudy so we didn't get to do any actual observing.

That looks great! I could maybe even take the night off from footy for that!  ;D ;D Have to see what the weather is like closer to the time.

another hobby!!! your worse than me  :o

i'm hoping to bring the family down, my wife likes astronomy, but hates the cold, so any stargazing attempts have usually only lasted minutes :(  better take my car, there's a sunroof in it and heated seats  ;D

IRISH ASTRONOMICAL ASSOCIATION: MEDIA RELEASE.

STARGAZING LIVE continues with 'A Night Under the Stars' at Delamont Country Park, 27 January.

Continuing the very successful Stargazing Live on BBC the Irish Astronomical Association has been invited by the BBC to present another evening extravaganza on Friday 27 January.
This time the event will be at Delamont Country Park, near Killyleagh on the shore of Strangford Lough. The event will run from 6.30 to 10.00 p.m., and it will feature as a LIVE broadcast on Radio Ulster from 8 to 10 p.m. that evening. The presenters will be the well-known Anne-Marie McAleese and Darryl Grimason

HIGHLIGHTS:

*Public Observing if clear: Venus, Jupiter, + all the usual Deep Sky wonders using a selection of powerful telescopes and binoculars. Live telescope images may also be displayed on computer monitors beside the telescopes for easier viewing. Wrap up warm from head to toe for this!
*Starshows in the big inflatable planetarium. Due to the expected demand, these presentations will be ticket only, issued on a first come - first served basis.
*Amazing Photo Exhibition: The fantastic A0 size photos produced for International Year of Astronomy 2009 will again be on show, plus some of the best from other sources.
*Telescope and binocular exhibition: see all the varieties available, the pros and cons of each, and learn how to use them to their best capacity.
*Bring your own telescope, and we'll show you how to set it up, and use it to its best capacity.
*Meteorites: an exhibition of many different sorts of meteorites - hold in your hand a piece of outer space (if you can hold it!), with experts there to talk about them.
*See an actual piece of Moon rock!
*Our own local "Ulsternaut" - Derek Heatly from Co Down, who will be the first Ulsterman to go into space. Derek has booked to go into space with Virgin Galactic's Spaceship Two, and will be there to talk about his training experiences and forthcoming flight, with videos.
In other words, something for everyone.
The IAA has been recognised by the BBC as an official 'Partner' in delivering this part of the programme. More on the IAA website: www.irishastro.org and www.bbc.co.uk/stargazing for updates.

did you go Liam? we made it for 6.30... thank goodness, when we came out of the star show the place was packed..  Eoghan and friend had full supervised use of all the telescopes available as there were no q's, and the owners were extremely helpful and kept their attention with lots of interesting information (although they'd forgotten most of it during the trip home  :)).

yes we made it there for about 8.30pm, then managed to walk straight into the inflatable planetarium (nice bit of kit), after that we had a look through a few telescopes, spotted jupiter and its 4 moons, met the ulsternaut and held a bit of the moon, not your normal friday night  ;D

The star show is great  :) the ppl that take is are so passionate about the subject, it would be hard not to enjoy it. We got the full 30 chat last year at Castle Espie, but as the guy said last night the real star show was outside. Matthew was a bit disappointed the dome wasnt a bouncy castle though  :)

Your right Liam.. it definitely wasnt the normal Friday night!  :)
