After a day out in the hills with sleet showers today i reckon i'll have to splash out on a good pair of gloves, something waterproof and usuable with ropes, leather faced? warmth isn't a big issue, as i can always throw a larger pair over them if needed. £30 budget on these, but might go higher if it was really justified, but reluctant too as gloves are one of those so easily lost items :'(
so what do you all have and what do you think of them?

Hi Liam, ive a couple of pairs that work really well for me.
The Extremities Velo glove, nice glove thats warm and doesnt take up too much room in the rucksack, dry out easily when they get wet, these would go everywhere with me.
The other pair is the mountain equipment guide glove, i got these for sking in austria and after a weeks hard use handling ski poles and general wear and tear they are still as good as new, yeah they are £40 but well worth the money and man are they warm, bring on the snow!
-
thanks john but a lot of those gloves look bulky, i want to be able to tie/untie ropes with them on, waterproofness is the issue, my hands don't get that cold as long as they stay dry (my toes are my achilles heel in the cold weather) i'm looking at something from the sealskin range at the moment
-
I have a couple of pairs from the sealskin range. i have a pair which are like skiing gloves and i have these www.wiggle.co.uk/sealskinz-ultra-grip-gloves/?lang=en&curr=GBP&dest=1&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=sealskinz%20ultra%20grip%20gloves&utm_campaign=sealskinz
They say they give great dexterity but sorry they do not. They are cold unless u wear liners in them. They are waterproof however.
-
these are the ones i've been pondering over: Sealskinz All Season Glove
http://www.cotswoldoutdoor.com/index.cfm/product/sealskinz-all-season-glove/fuseaction/products.detail/code/1C310401/id_colour/124/group/5146/level/3
With a supple and durable goat skin all leather palm, this fully waterproof glove is simple, comfortable and dexterous. Ideal for the great outdoors, the All Season Gove from Sealskinz is versatile enough to be worn at any time of the year.
-
I've got mixed report about sealskinz - some people love them, but I've heard of multiple people whose gloves started to leak. As always with things like this it is difficult to know why they are leaking; care/cleaning, accidental puncture, poor quality control - all are possible. I have a pair of sealskinz socks, but I've never needed to wear them!
-
what size did you get? i have wee girly hands so not keen on buying online, rather try them on in the shop and never that near a millets :(
-
Hey liam i have those gloves too. Used them when doing my ML rope work and they were grand.
-
You could always try a trick I used back in my motorbike days... surgical gloves underneath glove of your choice. Saves you splashing out extra for waterproof gloves :)
I got a pair of Outdoor Designs gloves last year that I'm really happy with. They are the Taku Stretch glove and although they aren't waterproof they are windproof and close fitting. The close fit means I can easily operate my camera and phone with them on, so you'd have no issues with rope work. If you take a look Outdoor Designs (http://www.outdoordesigns.co.uk/products_gloves.html) might have an waterproof equivalent of the same glove...
-
I had a quick look around and asked a few people for suggestions the other day. The suggestions were all coming out at more than £30 (more like £50), but they were coming from people who frequently do rope work. The only alternative that I came across that was in budget was the Outdoor Design Summit 3-in-1. Waterproof and warm outer with a thin liner for when extra dexterity is needed - price £27. Might not be exactly what you are looking for, but maybe worth a look.
-
got a pair of those mountain (make) gloves out of cotswold yesterday. was actually in for gaiters. flippin expensive, but used them last night out walking the dog and they are warm. Leather palm and finger ends. Got a strap on them for when you take them off you just let them hang like a child.
hate getting gloves, my fingers never reach the ends. The wrist strap lets them like kids gloves which is good because fingers are to short..........
worst part is i think i bought womens gloves and they still dont fit.
-
thanks for all the help, i'm still not sure, what shop has the best range of gloves as i'll have to go and try a few on, definitely can't be a thick glove as i have to be able to use a camera with them, unless they slide off quick and easy (then those straps would be handy) i'll be in belfast tomorrow so hopefully will get a look around the shops
-
Well i had a good trawl round the shops the today, as i was in the centre of town so visited Tiso, Millets (40% sale ended yesterday >:( ) Blacks, TKmaxx and Cotswolds (many thanks to Simon & James at Cotswolds for their excellent customer service), I reckon the Sealskinz all season glove i mentioned earlier is the nearest i'll get to what i want, not quite nimble enough fingers for changing camera settings but should be ok for taking pics, and they tick all my other boxes, leather palms, waterproof, not too warm (i'll pick up a cheap set of ski gloves on ebay for warmth), just have to wait for the sales then i'll take santa on a shopping spree ;D
p.s. why are all gloves black !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

tk max has a load of ski gloves in at the moment, some of them have pertex lining and at under 20 quid seems like a good buy.

Good find, was down at TK Maxx yesterday and they have a great selection of gloves, i took a look at them and then went upto Sports Direct to check out theres at their ongoing sale, they have gore-tex gloves reduced to £37 from £78, ahhhh, decisions, i felt like a donkey stuck between two bales of hay, gonna head back down today and will definitely, without a doubt, maybe get a pair, lol.

ski gloves are best picked up on ebay, so many people go skiing once and splash out on all the gear :) (me included :( )

You're right Liam, ebays been brilliant for other purchases, but i'd rather get a decent pair sooner that later (my cheapo gloves were soaked through cycling down to Sports Direct yesterday) and it's good to actually try them on for that perfect fit.
-
very true, its important to get a good fit
-
I think i've changed my mind again and might go the extra few quid (£45 :o ) for the sealskinz sporting glove with removeable finger and thumb
http://www.sealskinz.com/gloves/sporting-gloves
(http://shop.packyourbags.com/acatalog/t_medium-sealskinz-sporting-glove.jpg)
although you can get the all season glove in red, decisions decisons ???

ruining a good pair of sealskin by cutting holes in the finger and thumb?

ruining a good pair of sealskin by cutting holes in the finger and thumb?
well i haven't actually tried a pair of these on yet so can't comment of the waterproofness of the finger and thumb detachable bits, but i imagine you just have to be a bit more careful not to dip those particular digits in the water, considering all gloves already have a hand sized whole in top is it really going to make a big difference ;D
-
do your hands normally fall off in the wind and rain? i'd get that seen too 8)

After 2 years of careful deliberation, and a few cheapo ebay purchases later, i finally bought my original choice (Sealskinz All Season Glove) today! and as its now lashing outside, i'm off for a dander in the hills to test them out ;D
-
Didn't see you in the shop, did you get them in Cotswolds?
-
Went to the city centre store (avoiding you 8) )
So went for a wee hike to meet the guys at Spinkwee Camp, the gloves performed well with lashing rain, bit tricky to get back on again if you get your hands a bit damp (do not sprinkle when you tinkle ::) ) comfortably held a bottle of cool beer :) , dexterous enough to keep on while change battery in the headtorch (but it is easy to do with my headtorch) so far so good, just wish my waterproof trousers stayed as dry inside >:(

Bit late to the show on this one but otherwise I would of said splash out of a set of Hestra [urel]http://hestragloves.com/en/[/url] Most of the outdoor type models have real leather instead of the faux stuff you get for anything under 40 quid. I looked at a few gortex, sealskin types but avoided them as they all defy the material properties.
Most if not all outdoor tech materials rely on a method of water beading and rolling off the fabirc, this is reduced with dirt and wear. By their very nature gloves are meant for holding, squashing things in. This just pushes any possible dirt into the fabric and increases the wear on them. So tech fabrics are a pointless thing for a glove (okay for mittens). Full grain leather will happily handle anything you do to it as long as you look after the leather sections.
-
I already have a set of Beal full grain leather gloves http://www.ropelocker.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=172¤cy=GBP&gclid=CKvOlcqJ4rsCFSbHtAodiVQAUQ which i use for ropework, my Sealskinz will be for more general use, and maybe a little ropework in the very cold weather. The Hestra range do look good, but I had a voucher for Cotswolds to use up :)
