Good photos John Also saw them on your facebook a/c. We were out teaching Basic Navigation today and because we were standing around a lot, it was very cold out. We could see snow on tops odf the mountains.
-
i was around spelga area and got no more than a facefull of sleet, bloomin freezin, popped into hilltrekker on way home to look at new gloves for the santa list ;D great pics, bearnagh looks even better with some snow
-
was up Slieve loughshannagh\ott mt. with Chloe today. god it was cold with wind chill but a good walk
-
I wasn't too far away from you Gaz, we did a loop of Meelbeg. Nothing like the snow that jsurginor had, depending on which side of the wall you where on.
Nice side:

p.s. John: I'm off all week and been thinking about bombing over to Slieve league to have another go at it (http://www.flickr.com/photos/mcrobert/sets/72157626561319496/). Where you going to try to do it one day including the drive? Wasn't sure if it would be possible, thinking perhaps heading the day before and grabbing a B&B in Teelin, or sleep in the car in the lower car park.
-
Looks great, I fancy a bit of snow hiking myself. Hopefully we'll get plenty between now and Jan!
-
nice pics. looks quite wild with a bit of snow
would be fun sleeping out in it ;D
-
quick question
what sort of temperatures can you expect up say Binnian on a snowy winters day?
-
Depends on Wind, Time of Day, and where you are (Hight Wise) sure you could be as low ans -15 maybe more. but as i said depend on conditions
-
-15 still cold.
-
-15 still cold.
The worst I have been in was -22. I was no fun fair ride but I was on the roof of Africa so I didn;t mind or care.
-
I think over -25 is when frostbite needs to be considered? I mean, say an hour without gloves, then your finger tips are at risk?
-
had an hour to spare this evening while in newcastle so popped up slievenamuck to see the snow and get a few pics

it was a bit cloudy which hid the moon, pity at it was in the perfect position to get a nice reflection off spelga dam, ah well, maybe tomorrow night
-
Great pics Liam. You must cut a scary sight when you're running around with a couple of torches getting the long exposure shots :)
-
just the one headtorch, i put in on white light when walking away from the camera, then onto red when i walk back towards the camera, but you've given me an idea, if i get out tonight i might get an interesting shot....
-
hows those boots holding up liam?? looks like they are getting a good work out!! ;D
-
oh yes, its a strange and great feeling having dry feet at the end of every hike :) although they look a year old now with the abuse they've had, i'll soon know how tough this leather really is ;D
-
I managed to get out today to enjoy the snow ... just can't resist the pull! Bloody good day in the hills!

i didn't manage to get out there tonight and and looks quite wet anyway, hopefully driving through them tomorrow while still daylight, might have time for a quick summit if a see some snow
-
Nice to see a bright coloured jacket there Simon. Makes a change from black. Mines black though too :-[
-
well you'll like my red coat then ;D
got a quick pop up the hills during my lunchbreak today, not much snow left below 650m, i was lower and didn't have time to go high, just a wee quick scoot up carn mountain

-
great pics, your 1st photo is where Chloe and me had late lunch on sunday. it was very windy at style and bitterly cold so no argument from me when Chloe asked to go back

;) :o :) See as you had you little thing out, the windometre or whatever its called was it not a working lunch? ;)
-
Couple more pics to throw into the mix.
Was up Binnion on Monday
First time I've been up it since the path got fixed up...and it's excellent, dead easy to follow, but it's not just boring monotonous steps like up Donard, looks really natural plenty of bits that you have to clamber over.
(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7157/6461153291_0465c1dd77.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/mcrobert/6461153291/)
Windly but only a light dusting of snow.

Sun was shining on the other side of the valley.
(more (http://www.flickr.com/photos/mcrobert/sets/72157628294170129/))
And Slieve Gullion on Tuesday (never done this one before)
(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7008/6469068189_54c0a06a10.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/mcrobert/6469068189/)
Was a bit hairy but the path was easy enough to follow..well erroded with blue stakes in the ground every hundred yards.
(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7145/6469069077_344c251f0c.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/mcrobert/6469069077/)
Loads of snow. Ankle deep on the path, knee deep off piste and chest deep drifts at the summit (face planted myself a couple searching for a geocache up there)
(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7164/6469069513_8927144118.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/mcrobert/6469069513/)
Icy summit uber cairn.....

.... with trig point on top.

"Round round get around, Chuck gets around"
What's the craic with that "path closed" sign? Is that up out of Carrick Little? I was maybe going to be up that way on Saturday.
-
Yup, taking advantage of a week's holiday :)
Indeed the sign was at the Black Gate (top of the lane coming from the carrick little cark park)
I suspect it was just a H&S thing as I saw two of the fellas from the Mourne Heritage Trust working a small digger on the path that runs past the forest.
I wouldn't worry about it too much, you will be able to get past them ok.
-
great pics chuck, that path up binnian is great, heres a wee snap I took of a portion of it on a particularly cloudy day up there!

love the pics chuck, especially that icicle ones, i love seeing things from different angles, gives me ideas :)
-
How are the Mournes looking? If anyone who lives down that way and can see them could upload a photo it would be cool.
I'm trying to decide whether to take Friday off or not. A good dump of snow could help me make up my mind.
-
I dont know about the mournes but Divis and the black mountains are covered.

Just a slight dusting at the mo. There was some expected last night, but it didnt arrive.. you never know we could get some yet. If it arrives i'll let you know :)
-
i'll be in newcastle tonight so will have a report for you, might even get a sneaky summit in the dark ;)
got caught up in snow on the belfast hills today, the cars were just about getting through but the trucks weren't
-
just back from newcastle and it was too dark to see up the hills and i didn't have time for a quick summit :(
-
Had a look this morning and its just as AnnieAnne says, only a slight dusting >:(
pic below is of donard
-
Thanks for the replies. Nowt exciting about Donard there. Decided not to bother taking the day off. Mind you the prospect of a free Chinese on the company helped make that decision ;D
-
Loads of snow up here in Larne if you fancied a go at the Antrim Hills instead...but too misty to tell if it's covering the mountains or just our work's car park :)
But good call whoRya, snow comes and goes...but free food is harder to come by...enjoy :D
-
May just have to try to get a blast up Agnew's Hill then, sometime over the weekend.
I did manage to get a bit of snow on my boots before the Christmas Camp.
