Post by: Wild_Camper2013 on November 20, 2011
I am wanting to get a knife like this http://www.lmpenterprises.co.uk/heavyweight-survival-army-knife-1097-p.asp (http://www.lmpenterprises.co.uk/heavyweight-survival-army-knife-1097-p.asp) for my camping trips. I dont think I can get it mailed from England to here, So wondering if you guys know any good stores over here that sell knifes like that with a reasonable prices.

Sorry... But WTF do you plan on doing with a knife that size...??

Almost 3/4 kg with a 14" with a 9" blade...!!

You'd be better off buying an axe, cause with a knife that big, that's about all you'd be able to use it for..

I suggest you reconsider your options before throwing your money at one of the biggest pile of crap I've ever seen and regretting it for a long time....

Oh, and generally 'good knives' aren't made out of 440 stainless, go for one with a carbon or D2 steel blade
440 doesn't have a enough carbon in it to hold an edge for long... Ok you can get it really sharp, but you'd better get used to carrying a sharpening stone about too, and be prepared to use it almost every time you want to cut something....

From that knife site...

Think - Do you have 'reasonable cause' to be carrying 9" of cheaply slung together steel....

--------------------

The Criminal Justice Act (1988) says that you may carry a knife with a blade length of 3.0" or less so long as it is capable of folding. That means no fixed blade knives. But use your loaf - a knife has no place at a football match, in a pub, nightclub or school and becomes an offensive weapon in these circumstances in just the same way as a screwdriver, or any other innanimate tool.

But I NEED a Bigger Knife ...
If you wish to carry a larger knife then you must have 'reasonable cause'. That means that you must be able to prove that you had a genuine reason for carrying the knife.

You may carry a larger cutting tool if it is associated with your work (for instance a chef may carry a 9.0" butchers knife roll to and from work), or if it is associated with your sport, (for instance a fisherman may carry a 6.0" fillet knife, a hunter may carry a 12.0" fixed blade hunting knife, a camper may carry a 10" camping knife).

Don't forget it's there though. If you stop off in Tesco's for a can of beans on your way home take the knife off of your belt and lock it in your glove box, or your local Bobby will be unimpressed at your excuses. When transporting a knife by car keep it locked away in the glove box or securely stored in the boot of the vehicle. Do not slip it into the door side-pocket, under your seat or in a centre console, this is a dangerous practice, and if stopped by the Police this gives the impression of keeping the knife close to hand.

Don't Give The Police A Hard Time ...
Ensure that you comply fully with the law. The Police take breaches of knife law very seriously, and take our advice, you really don't want to be caught on the wrong side, it's just not worth it.

I see know reason why they wouldn't post over here; it's not illegal to own.

However, the knife itself looks like a huge pile of poo  :-\ I wouldn't spend more than £5 on it and wouldn't expect it to hold up for very long.

What do you need a knife for? Ask that and I'm guessing that monstrosity doesn't fit the bill.
Anything more than 4 inches is a waste when it comes to general camp duties.

If you're looking for a decent knife retailer take a look at Heinnie in the UK; they offer free delivery and have a huge range to drool over  ;D
This MOD survival knife would outlast anything from LMP Enterprises  ;)
And I know which I'd rather be 'caught' with  8)

I would tend to agree with a couple of the other replies.  I don't believe the quality of that knife would be up to much, and it has quite a scary look to it.

Having decided upon what you actually want to use your new knife for, I would recommend searching the net or visiting one of the numerous hunting/fishing shops around the province were you will be able to buy quality and receive a bit of advice at the same time.

Drongo above, was also right about the 440 Stainless Blade.  Your heart will be broke trying to keep it sharp.  The main reason for carrying a knife is to have access to a good sharp edge when you need it.  440 will not offer this and will let you down badly when you really need it.

forget about a knife for cutting wood for a fire mate, you want a folding saw for that or a bow-saw blade to make your own bow saw.

as for a knife? you could fork out 200 quid for a ray mears clone or something similar.

from time to time i have a few blade blanks, knife making is a hobby of mine.

forget 440 steel, its monkey metal as far as knife making goes. you want at least 3mm o1 tool steel or flat ground stock as its commonly known.

its easy to get sucked into `tactical`looking knives but in reality the jobs you think it will do usually require completly different tools.

ps, im not trying to sell you a blade ,try making one yourself.....

After looking at many of these folding saws I went for a Bahco Laplander. It's a great bit of kit with replacement blades available should you need them.

I bought the blade its self and made a handle out of zebra wood, to be fair the blade comes very sharp and seems to keeps its edge.

If you are looking to make a knife some other blanks are avaliable, for instance I have the Mora Laplander 90 Drop Point Blade Blank on order

Along with Ambonia Burl Scales

I bought a few folding pruning saws from Poundland during the summer. For a quid they are excellent  ;D

The Mora knives are hard to beat; you can buy one for tenner up to £40.

It's shame that few brick & mortar shops have a decent selection of knives  :-\ I asked a guy why he had hardly any; he said it was more trouble than its worth with knife laws and kids looking to buy them  ::)

You do need a good fixed blade for camping, pocket knives just don't cut it [pun intended  ;D ]

For me, my go to knife is found on the Leatherman Skeletool, the blade is extremely sharp and very durable. You also have the advantage of the other few tools.

I too am looking for a knife at the moment. Its main use would be for shaving off some tinder for use in the kelly kettle.

Wouldn't want to spend a fortune, I was thinking the following would be fine to get me started:

Any thoughts?

Agreed...  I'm definitely in the market for a good quality fixed blade with a bit of weight behind it.  I intend using it for bushcraft type activities such as shelters, fire screens making pot supports for an open fire and hammock supports.  All with drop wood of course  ;)

An axe would be the perfect tool if it wasn't for the weight, so I think a good quality fixed blade of about 9 inches would be a good all-rounder.

I'm dropping hints here if anyone wants to buy me a Crimbo Pressie  ;D

This is mine...

It's D2 Steel Enzo Trapper with Wild Olive & Red Micarta Scales...

Bought the blank and shaped the scales myself also added a brass eyelet and cord...

Took an age to get a good edge on it, but it holds it for ever...!!

The Scandi grind is great for light chopping, carving and even splitting the odd branch and some times ash logs or other suitable grained woods.
Also great for meat, but not so great for veg as it slices the length of the grind, then kinda chops the rest...

Cost me about £120 tho for the bits, plus about 2-3hrs to put together, but it was worth every penny...

120 quid???? lol you wuz robbed!

id recon 4 quid for the steel,a quid for the handle materiel,a quid for the vulcanized liners and maybe 10p for the brass lanyard tube.

and to be honest the grind is a little high, you want it about 8mm on 4mm steel (only my opinion).

This has been a great Thread...  I've really enjoyed it.  Has left me itching to make myself my own personalised bushcraft knife.

Here's a site offering loads of blanks and bits and bobs just to let you see what's out there:

http://www.english-handmade-knives.co.uk/acatalog/Knife_Making_Supplies.html

I'm sure there are many more out there on the interweb.

If I'm going to do this, I want to do it right and create something that could last a lifetime, so if anybody who knows a thing or two about knife making fancies giving me a bit of advise on what I'm looking for that would be great.

I would be looking a multi-purpose blade blank of a decent length and weight - Approx 7-8 inches (Not including handle) made of top quality steel/metal that will hold an edge.  Advice on the quality of the steel is my main request, as I know very little about this area and I don't want to waste my time creating a work of art that is not fit for purpose.

Have a look at www.brisa.fi

They are the main stockists of Enzo knives and have some easy to make kits using the blank I've got...

I also fancy a Enzo folder, but can't justify it ATM

All you need is some araldite (slow set) a few clamps and some sandpaper...

uncle rays blades are made of 01 tool steel 4mm thick and about 230 mm long.

there are various places to buy blanks already heat treated,so all you need is a couple of bits of vulcanised fibre and wood (or horn,or plastic)

a cheap way to source wood is to simply get a few samples from a shop that sells wooden flooring,or if you know any floor-fitters (which is what i do) ask them to keep you a few bits of well grained oak, maple birch, ash, mahogany, cherry, walnut .......you get the picture.

if youd like to do it all from scratch you can order 01 from phoenix steel on the internet but it will cost you about 12 quid postage which is why i buy plenty when im ordering it.

also, you,ll find 3mm easier to work with and every bit as durable as 4mm(which is too thick in my experience)

for more info id recommend bernie garlands forum which will tell you everything you need to know about knife making, though id steer clear of british blades which i consider to be unhelpful and authoritarian IN MY OWN OPINION i might add.

there are a few threads on here of my blade making, might be interesting to a few...

If you're considering an everyday carry legal knife you should take a look at the Spyderco UKPK; it is an awesome piece of knifeness  ;D

If you want a good knife that won't let you down AND stay on the right side of the law the UKPK's are the way to go.

They do a cheaper version at only £40ish. Steel's not as good but still a great knife.

I carry my UKPK every day so staying legal is very important. Apart from my multitools I only have a few locking folders. The way I see it is if I have 'good reason' to carry a locking knife I can just bring a multitool and a fixed blade  ;D

While the blades on multitools are great; my Leatherman Charge TTi has S30V steel. They can become uncomfortable if using for prolonged periods.

nice! but no green handled one?

ive used my ukpk everyday and two days ago the handle clip broke on it from excessive use and strain, plus the blade is about half an inch shorter from sharpening it but its by no way a cabinet queen and gets opened everyday for something of other.

saying that though, its absolutly rubbish for bushcraft unless your only going to use it to slice mushrooms.... but then its not designed for anything like battoning carving or chopping.

ps, heres the link to the thread i mentioned earlier...http://www.ni-wild.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=268.msg6840#msg6840

No green, yet  ;)

The G10 models have been discontinued and I don't fancy a Titanium one  :o  My black one is everyday carry and the orange is a back up. The maroon FRN UKPK was sold not long after that family pic.

Would quite like a Spyderco Urban or even their newer Squeak; perfect for when you don't want to scare the bejesus out of someone  ;D

yeah but does it say `Golden, Colorado U.S.A Earth` on the other side of the blade????? lol.

thats half the reason i got one .......good luck finding a green one. the G10 handles are far superior in every way too.

by the way , ive also got a couple of the `byrd` knives which are a subsiduary of spyderco. Not the same steel, but reasonably priced workers ,only drawback is that they lock.

as for legal carry? the cops were called to craigavon shopping centre to apprehend a knife carrying skinhead recently. when they saw me in my work trousers with a mora clipped on one leg,a spiderco clipped in my pocket and three stanley knives with different blades in each - they had to concede i had reason to carry every one of them, i might even have got away with a tommahawk in my belt too lol though i,ll try that when my cold steel trailhawk arrives later in the week. :P

Just had a search; it's Maniago Italy on the other side  ;D
You see UKPK's for sale on some US forums. The down side is UK customs have confiscated a few calling them a gravity knife  ::) The easiest solution is to get the seller to tighten the pivot before sending  ;D

They are releasing the Byrd Tern; non locking, G10 scales with CR13 stainless steel, flat grind, leaf shape blade. Coming in around £26  :)
