NI-WILD TRIP
When : 22nd October 2011
Where : Slieve Binnian
We're going to hit Binnian next month with a view to visiting a spot that Chuck found (original thread here (http://www.ni-wild.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=1496.0)). It's a collection of collapsed old quarry buildings (mostly walls I think).
As usual, everyone's welcome, should be a child friendly night round the hobo stove.
Plan:
Travel plan:
1) Park at Meelmore and hike over by whatever route seems the most fun (Hares Gap, Brandy Pad, Beg, Cove, Lamagan, Binnian or Hares Gap, Brandy Pad, Annalong Valley, Binnian.)
2) Park at Silent Valley and walk up (technically you're not supposed to park overnight but we've heard that they operate a bit of an "don't ask, don't tell policy")
3) Park at Carrick Little and chance the locals
4) Park at Meelmore and get a taxi to Carrick Little (About £8 or £2 a head with 4 peeps, less if you get an 7 seater)
We've gotten taxis a few times and it's been well worth it. A 7 seater from Bloody Bridge to Meelmore only cost us £2 a head. We can get in touch with them in advance to check for pricing.
Thoughts below.

Will you be risking the cars in Carrick little car park or parking up the lane ? If parked couple of times in car park but never on a saturday night
-
the lane now has a private sign on it so no parking there :'(

I think the idea was to walk over to the site from Meelmore.

I might be up for this. will keep a eye on the thread

I think this would be best and the walk out on sunday morning.
-
This would be a very rough route from Meelmore Lodge to Slieve Binnian (or vice versa). 8 miles and 1,100m ascent. You could also drop to Ben Crom or the Annalong Valley.

I should be up for this. Just got my Neoair mat today and by then should have my Jetboil Zip to test drive.

Defo, have to get those bad boys dirty!

Thanks Matt, keep my fingers crossed
-
Whorya.
What do you think, can i pry you out for this. Il need to get this tent of ours sorted for it.
-
Aye, I'm up for this one all being well! Been a while since I've been out and I've missed the last few NI-Wild trips so it's about time I got the finger out :)
My preference would be to park at Meelmore and dander over. Would be good to return the following day by a slightly different route as well, although perhaps the Brandy Pad is better left for the return journey ;)
-
I could be up for this, work permitting! I would be in the tent, is there much room at this site for pitching?
-
oh yea we are. :D.
-
room for a beardy one?
-
Always chum, it's been a while! ;D
room for a beardy one?
-
So anyone know what it's like up there space wise for tents etc?
-
We've not been to this spot before so I'm not sure. Though if there's been buildings there in the past I'd guess getting a tent somewhere would be fine.
-
So anyone know what it's like up there space wise for tents etc?
It's very weird it looks like a training camp for wall building , there is some few flat spots for tents from what I can think off and plenty of Walls to put a taro up against

cheers mate, my wee tent doesnt take up much room anyway, so should be grand!
-
the down rally is on in tollymore forest that day, if anyone is in the area looking for a bit of motorsport action! a great wee rally have been to it a few times, there are stages in castlewellan too! my plan is to watch some rallying then make my way over to binnian after that!

Just realised the rugby world cup final is early AM Sunday 23rd October. Just a caveat to say that if Ireland make the final I'm going to have to give this camp a miss... unless of course someone can get a big TV on top of Binnian :D

If Ireland get to the final it will be something I'l have to see to believe, not hear.
As much as I love them and wish them luck, its just something I'm not counting on or putting my hopes on.
Dont be cancelling the camp just yet. ;D

well said, and congrats on you and I becoming senior members! go us! lol ;D
-
If Ireland make the final that would be good, even better if England make the final but I will still be coming either way.
-
I'm going to try and make this, but i might try and meet you's around the top of the Devils coachroad. I'll only be able to stay for the day so if i can. I'm going to park in Carrick little and head up the valley to the bottom of the coachroad and then scramble up it. Then tag along with you guy's over the top.

Can anyone advise me on the best route to Binnian, If I can make it, I plan on coming up via Donard wood and up to the saddle, the best (easiest) route from there would be a great help as I am unfamiliar with the terrain.

That's a long route (one I may need to take in the dark), but there are 2 main options:
1. Go West on the Brandy Pad a short distance, then follow the central Mourne ridge along Beg, Cove, Lamagan and Binnian. This way has a fair bit of ascent, and if the weather is bad you may need some confident navigation to come down Lamagan as it mainly has steep, slabby sides and they come off a vague domed top. You need to trust your bearing to keep on the easier ridge to the saddle with Binnian.
2. Go West on the Brandy Pad a short distance (over the streams) and drop down the East side of Cove to pick up a narrow single-track along the base of the above mountains. You can turn at Percy Byshie (?) for a long ascent up and over Binnian via the saddle with Lamagan, or continue on the path towards Annalong wood and spear off up the side to the campsite at an appropriate moment. Flatter, quicker and more sheltered. Can be boggy. Hardest part is picking up the track as there is no clear link between it and the Brandy Pad. Even in clear weather you loose sight of it a while as you contour down around Cove. Not too bad though as the stream acts like a catchment feature if you wander too low.
Hope that helps.

Looks like we are both going camping.
Was very kind of both Ireland and England to bow out of the RWC just so we could go camping :D

It was very kind of them lol, would of been a good semi if they both won. but allas they were both poo.
-
Good timing to catch the Orionids meteor shower too.
-
Thanks for the detailed advice TwentyClicks, I can head out now with some confidence.
-
Those would be tough routes in the dark if you'd not done them before. We got lost around there before when the weather was really bad.

-
Your concern is duly noted RedLeader, My plan is the go on Friday morning and overnight in Annalong forest. My backup plan if the weather is bad is to hike in from Annalong, Don't fancy wandering around in the mist with a map and compass and no mobile signal.
-
Awesome. We did Meelmore Lodge to Annalong Forest in heavy snow and got pretty sidetracked to the point we ended up on the wrong side of the valley. People still ask how the hell we got lost on the Brandy Pad but when the snows deep and you can't see for the rain anythings possible :D

don't you use the garmin to keep you on the right path?
-

Nay bother. I'll be coming down after work, so if I need to bus it, I'll be hot-footing along that very route. I got lost coming off Lamagan once but love the old navigation now.
-
I was thinking about starting off at about 1:30 - 2pm. Any thoughts?

It's complicated :D

Can we get some final numbers for this camp. Please post if you're definitely going / not going.

I live in castlewellan, so would be more than happy to take you from Meelmore to Carrick Little.. :D
-
I'm still unknown a bit. If someone is leaving Belfast 6pm or after (and ok to give me a lift) I'll definitely be there, if not I need to consider when a bus would get me down and how much I feel like running the length of the Mournes in the dark - admittedly, something I normally would feel like ;D
Could be late to camp, but completely free the next day for lying in/gentle hiking.

Do you understand the meaning of Gentle Hike??? I thought you only had 2 speeds, Fast and get out the way!!!

Well get up early and you'll be there in time for breakfast ;D (do you make a good fry ::) )
I'll be doing that run in Dundrum on saturday so can't guarantee i'll be in the mood for a long walk after but i do hope to at least pop up to the campsite at some point over the weekend, especially if the weather is nice :)

If you put Craig in a Catscanner this is what you'd see

Unfortunately, once again, I can't make this one :(
I haven't been in a tent since the end of August, and haven't been wild camping since some time before that... getting serious withdrawal symptoms!

here's my estimated co-ords for the campsite for anyone using gps
N 54deg 08.357
W 5deg 57.898
The grid ref is J 330 231/J 331 230

I'm out :(, got roped into taking the kids to Funderland.
-
im out yet again as wifey has had a girly night planned for months and me not looking at calendar is not her fault ::) i could not cope with both boys as the youngest dont like walking :-[
-
Do you understand the meaning of Gentle Hike??? I thought you only had 2 speeds, Fast and get out the way!!!
"get out of the way" is only if I'm out of control. Gentle hiking has no pressing objective and requires not breaking into a sweat ;)
Saying that, I do need to be back for the cinema at 4pm.
-
The weather looks a bit dicey at the moment - wet with 34mph gusts on Sat night. I'm thinking if it doesn't improve through the week then dropping into Annalong Wood for a night round the fire might be prudent. We did a Binnian camp in bad weather last year and it was hairy enough.
-
We could see how it goes on Saturday and adjust the plan as we see it on Saturday night
-
Maybe. If the weathers to get worse at 9pm I don't want to be sitting on Binnian at 6pm thinking things are awesome. Plus if we were in a forest I'd go for a more fun food option.
We could see how it goes on Saturday and adjust the plan as we see it on Saturday night
-
I will see what Flip wants to do as well as this is a bit of a test for next year.
-
Cool. No need to worry until later in the week. Never know, the forecast might pick up a bit.

I did actually write this up on the calendar but mysteriously the strikethrough format was applied to it. :'(
-
Looks like it coiuld still be windy ::) and moist (not wet)
-
Okay laydees, considering the forecast and shitty week I've just had I'm thinking we move this camp.
Binnian is defo out with the wind anyway but hiking over to Annalong Valley in wind and rain doesn't seem like fun either. I propose we move the camp to Donard Wood. That way anyone that still fancies a decent hike can come over from Meelmore Lodge (or wherever) and anyone who wants a quick camp can just come up the Glen River.
Thoughts?
-
I'll speak to Flip and get back to ya.
-
Spiffy. You guys can still do a walk over if you're feeling adventurous. Only question is, we've a new spot in Donard Forest which is much more isolated with lots of wood but isn't quite so tent friendly. We did get 2 in last time though.
I'll speak to Flip and get back to ya.
-
See ya in Donard Wood.
-
What are your plans?
This is where we'll be. Spot is red square, blue line is best route. Don't go to our usual spot!!

Not 100% on route, may take a dander from Meelmore along the brandy pad. or over the top.
-
Agh, camp change. Definitely more likely to make it now. My friend may be able to come along too, though we might still be late as he's tied up til about 8pm. Will update tomorrow morn.
-
this suits me too, still not convinced i can stay all night but should be able to pop up for a swift half
-
If you insist I shall have a swift half!

Confirmed. I'll be there about 10 or so with my mate. Perfect intro to wild camping for him... NI-Wild camping 8)

don't be tempted to take a short cut through the trees any other way, i did it in daylight and its a little tricky, would be a nightmare in the dark, the blue line is along a small firebreak that you would only find if you had been there before, maybe first person there could place some logs on road to mark the spot, if anyone wants the gps co-ords i have them somewhere
-
We'll leave a marker on the path at the firebreak or call us and we'll come out. Coming in from any other direction is indeed a pain in the bum. We walked out through the forest and it was arduous.

-
Nice pics Liam, im sure you all had a good time. How many actually made it in the end then?
-
6 people, 4 in tents & 2 braving the bivvy
-
Great photos, after the winds and rain on sat i'm sure all were relieved it turned into a really still night for an outing, are the shelters still there, planning on heading there on sat 29th.
-
Yeah, the big shelter stands and there was a little lean-to beside it that I saw.
Decent, dry night was good fun. My mate enjoyed his first wild camp, and didn't mind the weather this morning when I dragged him up Commedagh... just the uphill that caused suffering! I'll get him signed up on here as he's keen to get out more often.
Good work on the brannock lads.
-
When i got to the car park i did feel sorry for him having to walk uphill in that weather especially after a night in the little/lidl tent , he must be keen if he wants to come back :o fair play to you graham (and don't listen to craig about all that expensive phd/rab gear you need, regatta & karrimor stuff will do fine ;) )
-
The shelter we originally found is still there but it's suffering badly filling with water. I ended up sleeping under an ominous bulge on Saturday and I was really nervous that it might burst if it rained. It also wasn't very comfy when the wind blew through which is why we stuck another tarp over the door.

Harsh ;D I was just really tired. When I've had too much to drink EVERYONE knows about it ;)

Here now, I let him have the neoair mat, cooked him bacon for breakfast and carried everything... can't be bad to that!
He just really needs a headtorch, map & compass, and a sleeping bag that doesn't have a 35L stuff sack ;D
-
i actually have a sleeping bag bigger than his :o and its been on each of the 7 7s too :)
-
Great write up Dave, but I did have a little snigger at lenny "forgetting" ::) his trousers, having a "brief" stop, then "getting wet from the waist down" :o then I near fell off my seat when you mentioned his John Wayne walk the next day ;D. Me bad

Great writeup Dave, enjoyed reading that. Twas in deed a good weekend but I wasn't totally jealous at you guys having to walk over and back considering the weather!
-
Gosh, Guys that was some camp you all had. Reminds me of some of the bad camps that I had as scout leader. Good report TypoOn.
-

Gosh, Guys that was some camp you all had. Reminds me of some of the bad camps that I had as scout leader. Good report TypoOn.

Thanks TwentyClicks and RedLeader, good to know the shelter still stands.

Right, I've been reading a lot of stuff in this forum over the past few days.
Mainly the write ups of past excursions into the hills for one reason or another.
And I have come to the logical conclusion that everyone on this forum is 'Nuts!'
Therefore, I have been left with no other choice.
End of the month I am buying that tent and associated gear and I'm gonna join ye's!
;D
(So many places to explore - The Mourne Mountains - like a CoCo's for adults :) )
-
Do it man, do it!!!!!!!
There's plenty of info regarding gear on the forum, so do your research and buy wisely, you can get some good stuff for little cost but just keep weight in mind.
Happy shopping :)

Are you sure you want to share a tent? ;D
