Title: Looking for small food containers.
Post by: RedLeader on September 20, 2011
I'm after containers for frequent use foodstuffs. Butter, sauce, oil, that sort of thing. Everything I see is either too small, too big or with lids that I'm not confident will stay on after some throwing about. I do have some tupperware containers but while they're not massive they're still far too big for all I want to take.

Any ideas?

Never worry, it's not worth any shoe leather at this point (especially since I'll hopefully be testing my new Jetboil w/coffee press at the weekend and only using dried / reheated food).

I actually have some of the cliplock square tupperware containers but they're just a but heavy and bulky for the sake of a knob of butter or squirt of ketchup. The other two containers above look good. A trip to the various "pound" stores is called for.

Zip-lock bag all the way :)  I've even used one to store cooking oil in and it worked a treat!  Although probs not as eco-friendly if you are chucking them out after every trip!

Good quality ziplock bags can be hard to come by. I can never find them in Tesco. Probably haven't looked that hard in fairness.

I usually go for the freezer bags that have an actual zip-lock rather than "press 'n seal".  Found them in both Tesco and Sainsbury, but you do need to hunt around sometimes.  Usually on the shelves beside cling film, tin foil etc.  Seem to hold up okay, although I wouldn't fancy one splitting with anything liquid inside!

I use the old plastic camera film holders for coffee , oil etc nice and robust and the lid stays on nice and tight . Not much room but it holds enough coffee etc for an overnighter

The Fuji ones have a more secure lid - the Kodak ones don't lock as tight and have more of an overhanging lip that could be caught and knocked open. I could spare a few if you want.

Baby bottles come in 125ml and 250ml sizes, and they come with a disk which fits inside the lid instead of using the teat...it's hardly worth buying any when you could probably get them given to you by someone who's got a toddler.

Or another suggestion is look in the baby isle of your nearest supermarket. They sell small portion food containers like these

After a few unsuitable containers and subsequent leaks I think I have finally solved this problem using shampoo/shower gel bottles that you get from hotel rooms.  They are a perfect size for oil, fairy liquid, sauce* etc.  They even have enough room for the milk you need for a couple of brews.

Wash well before use ;D

* I have taken to lifting a couple of extra satchets from fast food outlets for tomato sauce.

Try the Lakeland store in the Boucher Road, they have all sorts of containers, you might find something.

Oh, and they have Kendal Mint cake too!  :)

I agree with Paul72..  ive tried many sorts of containers, and Lakeland is by far the best.   Ive found the .5 ltr round container with blue lid the best..  it travels 100 miles everday to its destination with a stirfry, or other saucy thing in them. never let me down yet :) they also have a smart wee 3 container that screws on top of each other, handy for milk, raisins, sugar etc..  have fun :)

mate looked over you're problem, think i may have the answer as long as the opened minded.Like you i've struggled to find the right size cointaner for salt, sauce, oil, the usual cointainer style is no good for storing oil, sauce,so one day my wife came up with the solution.Sterile sample container from your gp surgery,(yes i know a urine bottle)but these are completly clean,& take up little space in your pack.i also use them as cache's for geocaching

I would use contact lens holders for fairy liquid, salt etc
