Title: Sleeping mat
Post by: Spud on September 09, 2011
Anyone got any recommendations for a good sleeping mat that won't break the bank? Doesn't have to be an inflatable one, just something to keep the cold out and that can take a bit of abuse!

Hi ya mate, i got myself a mountain equipment helium 3.8 last year and think its a real good job, reasonably light and its easy to inflate, cotswolds have them for £45 at the minute, im not sure if you want to spend that much but its a good investment.

Second vote for the ME helium 3.8 from me- £30 off at Cotswold.

Alternatives worth looking at are Alpkit sleeping mats: the basic is £20 and just slightly heavier.

Dutch Army closed cell mat. It's the thickest closed cell mat I've come accross and it won't puncture. I use it with an Alpkit 3/4 length  mat for added comfort.

Wow, that weight can't be right, it says '25 kg' it must be 2.5kg or that's one extremely heavy sleeping mat.

I went with the Multimat Superlite Compact, it's small but weighs less than 400g:

Is the Dutch mat just like a normal roll map ???

Its funny, I remember putting this post up, I now own a helium 3.8, and I think its great, very comfy, maybe not as light and small as some of the gram fanatics would require  ;D, but it does the job for me very nicely!

Just a thicker rollmat dave yes  :)

plus 1 for alpkit, I use the dirtbag with a german army folding mat to stop likelihood of punctures. Cheapest inflatables you can find and cant fault the quality.

I use a dutch army (made by artiach)(inflatable) mat, nothing really to compare it to to be honest. seems very robust and does its job without any fuss. found on ebay for under 20 quid.

I've been using the gelert Xtreme 3/4 mat for about a year now and find it v good. Got fed up with foam ones as they are simply useless in value to the size of the kit your carrying. Took the plunge on a self inflating but they do hit the pocket. Think amazon do the Gelerts now for about £35 but I know I paid about £45 for it last year. Packs down to about the same size as a packed away kettly kettle.

Neoair XTherm

Costs a lot of money but if you invest in one you will realise that it's money well spent. When you lay down on it with just a base layer on you swear blind it is electrically heated. Comfortable, light, packs small and can take a fair bit of abuse too. Packs an R-value of 5.7
At the moment I'm only using a silk liner when sleeping out.

As I mentioned it is expensive but I think it's value for money and I've always had a good nights sleep on it  ;D
