Title: Need a lightweight/srong 1/2 man tent for mountain use - any ideas??
Post by: lou on July 28, 2011
Hey All

I am after a 1/2man tent for myself to use when im out hiking/mountaineering.  Preferrably would love a lightweight one that i can carry easily but strong enough to stand strong winds etc.  I though of the Hilleberg Tarra 2 person?  not sure tho.

Any ideas would be great!!

Cheers Lou  ;D

Holy mother of pearl, the Hilleberg Tarra is £780  :o You could have someone carry you up the mountain and stand with an umbrella over you for that :D

I defo couldn't comment, I've never even seen a tent that expensive, you'd need to make sure you didn't get tentjacked :P

lol i didn't actually look at the price, it just looked like a cool tent.  Definitely wouldn't pay that....i wouldn't have that money lol!!

So to add to the list i need a tent that's lightweight, strong and CHEAP!!!

but at £780 it's got the groundsheet and free postage which is a plus.

At just over 4kg I wouldn't list the Tarra as lightweight either.  Do you just plan to use it in Northern Ireland, or are you going somewhere very windy?

you can have my pro-action hike lite (which is half the weight) at the knock down price of £500 if you want.

Drybag...i plan you hike elsewhere than Northern Ireland but here too of course.  Think my max budget is £300 or less.  £500 - £700 could get me on a months trip somewhere!!!  Cheers tho ;)

Im liking suspectmonkey's tent....looks like what i am after!

I know it may be a bit late now but I recently bought and used the Vango Helium 100 Tent.  Super tent really compact and light (under 1kg) plus it was a god ole windy night and i had no issue with it!  I got it for approx £180.

I'm very tempted by the Vango Helium 200. Any chance you could do a quick review of yours? Info on the internet is sparse on the Helium.

I thought it wasn't a bad quip!  Maybe we should start a jokes thread to see who's the best comedian!

I got if from Cotswold.  They did a price match for me...that was the cheapest i could find on the net so they matched it.  I thought it was a pretty good price for the ultralight.

LennyJ1 that was a good'n...made me laugh neway :)

well how did the new tent perform?

it performed brilliant!!  Sat nite was very wet and windy but the little tent passed with flying colours.  Not a drop of water got in and the structure was strong enough.  Having the little porch was handy in the bad weather too....left things alot easier.  The tent was put up and down in a jiffy...very straight forward and easy to handle.  I love it :)  So far so good.

Hopefully this weekend there'll be some better weather tho....ill get trying it out again.

Had the Helium out in November - a really stormy night - the little tent poles were being pulled out of the ground.

But i was absolutely amazed at how much a pole can bend without it snapping.  I was lying in the tent and the main pole was touching my head - fantastic tent plus really light.
