just having a wee look at the vango milano 250.
4.5kg but decent make and looks decent size. £45.
bit worried weight wise though. My old tent was about 2.5kg
just wondering could it double up if I was going away with gf.
bloody millets in belfast only have the 350 in which is 6.50kg so defo too big lol
seen lot of people use the gelert solo one, but it just looks that bit too small for me, think id rather have an extra kg and a bit more room.
sorry if this is a bit of cross posting. trying to keep new tent below £50.

This looks like it could be a good compramise

Some tent advice here:

had a mooch round millets there.
basically anything over 3kgish is just too big if one person is carrying it.
so gonna go and have another look, the solo one size i think is a wee bit too tiny, just want something I can move about and a small porch bit for a ruck sac/boots or getting dinner on if the weathers awful.
saw a karrimor for £65 but its mad bright blue, so hardly ideal if your stealth camping lol

i have one of those, did 5 mourne summits in it, bends a bit but never broke or leaked in some very wet and windy nights 8) but did eventually splash out on something lighter
-
had a look at this looks good apart from the bloody mad colour grrrr.
http://www.millets.co.uk/product/096483/KM-BETA-2011-BRT-BLUE-0.html
like the shape, anyone have one?
-
well at least you will be able to find it amongst the other tents ;D
i like the 2 doors and 2 porchs though, 3kg isn't a bad weight for what you get.
-
decent starter tent, my only concern is the colour be like a bloody beacon.
might see if I can pic one up on the reasonable off ebay.
-
field+trek have a Karrimor x lite 300 tent on sale that may be worth a look. Its 3 person and only 2.5kg, i know nothing about the tent but it may suit you well, it should have plenty of room. £180 - £60 in the sale.
-
I can see where you coming from with 3Kg being too much. But to be honest its not that bad. Unless your racing to the campsite you can afford extra weight.
I've carried a 5.5Kg tent up a big hill for 4 miles to Glenariff forest, took us about 2.5hours but its still do-able. And to be fair it wasnt that bad, only thing I really noticed is that the rucksack will push down on your back abit more, meaning not as much ventilation and more sweat.
Personally I'd rather carry extra weight if it means a better nights sleep. Not having to be crammed into a midget tent at the end of the day is a blessing. A good nights sleep is way more rewarding than not having to carry an extra 2kg.
-
I went and had a feel of the various sized tents in millets and as handy as the 1.5kg ones are I think I just find it too cramped.
I dont like idea oif having muddy boots, rucksacs and wet outer layers in the actual sleeping bit either.
I think the plan is get a 2.5-3kg job and start there and see how camping style develops, can always pick up a cheap smaller tent over the winter if its too big.
-
Sounds like a good idea. No need to rush into expensive equipment. Especially when the cheaper stuff can do the same job.
-
so instead of workin all night I have spent as much of my time researching the Gelert Solo as I want to find myself a tent light enough that I can disappear out on my own without needing someone else to split the tent with.
In general this little tent seems to review fantastically well and i sense that it may be my next purchase.
Definitely the best way to spend an overnight in McDonalds!! Researching Kit!!

Dammit, now I want a Quarter Pounder with Cheese...

at this time of day :o , surely a sausage and egg mcmuffin would hit the right spot :)

i agree, having carried a 5kg tent (18kg total pack weight) 6 miles recently through the mournes, it ceratainley slows you down (i was still first to campsite though ;D ) but if you aren't going too far and not in a rush (i.e. doing the mourne mountain marathon) then why not.
Here's an example of how much it slows you down:
Last year I went up Donard with 19kg rucksack in 2hr30mins, 1 week later i did it without a rucksack in 1hr 30mins, both occassions i was going as fast as i could without stopping for food (only stopping to breath), so if i'd gone ultralight (say 10kg) i reckon i would have done it in 2hrs.

Quarter pounder with cheese, breakfast of champions! :)

Nothing worse than hitting MickeyDs on the way to the hills and finding out it's still bloody muffin time. Get the grill on, this man wants meat and chips!

Hendy, I have the Solo. it is a great tent for a quick overnighter but would recommend having a waterprood bag to peg down outside to put in you extra kit as not alot of room inside.
-
thats my real issue tbh, id like one with a bit of a porch to throw gear into, or where you can get out of the wind to get a brew on if the weathers bad.
-
Here's a Vango Tempest 200 for £85 + £5 p&p which is a bit of a bargain. It has a porch, reasonable headroom and weighs 2.5kg.

thats perfect and literally an exact copy shapewise of my old tent, right down to weight.
I dunno if i can go £90 straight off though, just discovered my craghoppers rucksack was thrown out of my folks, so thats another thing to buy.
:(

Surf Mountain have a 25% off all Vango gear. You might get a bargain there.
-
For me the debate on tent weight v comfort comes down on the comfort side.
The Gelert Solo is light and compact but there isn't much room for kit, it's not practical to cook in and it's difficult, if at all possible to sit up in. I know ideally it would be great to be able to sit outside and only go in the tent when it's time for bo bo's but bearing in mind our 4-season per day climate then this might not be always possible.
I also have a Vango Spectre 300 two person tent which is slightly heavier but in which last week at Shelter Stone during rain and midge attack I was able to cook, sit up eat/read and have room for all my kit. With two people the same is really no bother.
If you have time and patience then try before you buy. If you can get out to an NI-Wild meet then there might be enough range of tents for you to trial.
-
I'm used to storing kit out of the tent the only thing that i store inside is my boots and obviously my sleeping gear the rest goes in the rucksack and i use two raincovers one over the back and one over the straps so its totally enclosed plus anything important gets drybaged.

looks like a bargain on the rucksack, i see they have a nice wee LICHFIELD TREKLITE 200 - 2 PERSON TENT for £45 weighing in at 1.9kg

the beta 2 arrived off ebay. With two sets of new pegs was £47 all in.
its much bigger than I expected, you can sit up in it and I can lie full strech, it has two sets of porches, so could properly be used as a two man tent for ruck sacks, boots etc or one area for gear and one for cooking etc. fancy.
I've never had a tent with alloy poles but they seem great quality to me compared to the plastic jobs I used years ago.
however as a one man tent, it would be very comfy indeed, I think I could even have the girlfriend share it for a maybe a night or two.
would be a bit too cosy for my liking if you were sharing with anyone else lol

bit late for advise on your part, i have a vango alpha 300, it's a piss easy tent to put up, strong when up, and has a nice porch area fit for two rucksacks and a bit of room for cooking!
cheap as chips too as far as i know?
-
vango alpha 300 is 5kg, I looked at the vango milano 250 as well (its £42 on sale) but its £4.5kg.
theres the vango alpha 250 I think thats 3.6kg?
The beta 2 is just over 3kg, I wouldnt want to go any heavier.
If anything, over time I can see myself going lighter, but at £47, its a decent starter tent and not too much of a shock to the system.
All I need now is a stove and a waterproof and im good to go!
-
b&m bargains were doing a stove for £8 or £9 and four bottles of gas for £4 in lisburn, dunno about any other stores?
I bought the stove and it seems like a good enough job, i'll get pics if you want?
I think my tent is an alpha 300 (2007 or 2008 though?) and on the bag it says 3.6kg.. wasn't too bad on my bag n i'm only a 'kid' haha!d thats the
EDIT: Says 3.65 on here, and thats the 2010 model? Quite light i thought..

I just took the 5kg figure from here...?
I've kind of my heart set on a trangia, I know ill fret and whinge and then eventually give in and just buy the damn thing from amazon.
-
not often i'd say it, but i think amazon is wrong lol? it says 3.6 on my bag, and i can't see why with 'newer models' they'd make it heavier! Your sorted anyway, and if i had the money i'd go for a trangia, but the stove was handy enough :)
