I know it's Friday night but has anyone got any trips planned into the Mournes this week-end, day walk or overnight? I'm toying with the idea of getting out but am undecided as to what to do yet. :-\
-
Not doing the mournes but am doing the sperrins on Sunday .. going to tackle Glenshane Mountain and a couple of others if you are interested
-
Thanks for the offer. Hope the weather is kind for you.
I'll probably just opt for a car camp at Bloody Bridge and a walk from there. :)
-
Decisions, decisions. Going to go to Silent Valley and walk up to the top end of Ben Crom reservoir at the Shelter Stone for an overnighter. Have talked about doing it for quite a while so now's the time to do it. Hoping the weather doesn't block out the stunning views.
-
Surf? Can you let us all know that your alive lol, ohhh i think you mite have took a bit of a battering on your overniter.
The weather has been orrible in Antrim here so ive a fair idea that the mournes may have been a bit rough.
-
Yes I'm alive, in more way's than one. I have been ravaged by midges. Look like I have the measles or chicken pox!
It was quiet windy and during the night there were gusts that pushed the tent in a bit. The rain wasn't heavy, just constant fine rain driven by the wind.
There was a D of Ed group, a couple and another solo camper all at the head of the reservoir and all suffered from the midges attacking. Hateful little things.
Anyway another trip to get me through the drudgery of the incoming week(s).
Thanks for your concern, how'd did your week-end go?
-
Flip, the weather that weve had this weekend i thought you wouldve took a real pounding out there, my nice was camping around there for her DOE and said the midges were a nitemare, the little blighters can really ruin your trip.
The closest i got to anything outdoorsy was a trip to cotswolds to get a map of donegal. I came away empty handed, were doing the glover walk in two weeks but on the maps of that area their only 1:50 000, and the route is split in half, giving you Errigal, lough Altan but thats really it, so you have to buy two different maps. Frustration!
-
Hi Rumblebum,
I have the Errigal map if you want to borrow it?
-
Hi kayak, thats very kind of you, i thought it would be hard to find one with the whole of the route on it from Muckish to Errigal. Where did you pick yours up from?
-
I bought it in Cotswolds and I think it is 1:50 one that you were talking about.
To be honest I was disappointed with the limited range of maps for Donegal..
-
Yeah ive tried a few places but i just think that detailed maps of donegal dont really exist.
Cotswolds will be the death of me, nearly every time i go in that place i come out with something lol.

Yeah I even tried Donegal for one!! I hope you are getting discount in there?

I have most of North Donegal on 1:50000 .. The IBSN;s are
ISBN: 1-901496-09-0 - NW Donegal
ISBN: 1-901496-19-8 - Central Donegal & Tyrone
ISBN: 1-901496-18-X - East Donegal & Derry
ISBN: 1-901496-14-7 - Donegal Nort Central
And you can get them online Here => http://www.osi.ie/en/starticle/special-interest-maps.aspx?sId=7 (http://www.osi.ie/en/starticle/special-interest-maps.aspx?sId=7)
but few are waterproof which is a pain

Surf, did you camp at the Shelter Stone or at Bloody Bridge and walk to the Stone?
Red, I parked in Silent Valley and walked to the Northern end of Ben Crom reservoir/Shelter Stone. That's the third time I've walked in that way, first camp though. Next time I think I'll come in from Meelmore Lodge. I will also be bringing a flame thrower for the midges. Bear says they're nice toasted!
-
Interesting. We asked Silent Valley before about leaving cars there overnight and they said absolutely not, but we did hear later that they generally operated a don't ask don't tell policy. So what gear did you bring if you had to carry it all? Did you leave your luxuries at home?

Awesome, there's nothing I love more than kitlists. Whats the Berghaus primaloft jacket like. Warm enough to keep you toasty with just a baselayer/fleece/wproof on a cold night with no fire?
-
Didn't get sitting out to try as the midges were having a rave party and the rain was on. However, at the Brandy & BBQ evening at Bloody Bridge I was wearing it but had to put a fleece over it as the night went on. It's light and does make you feel cosy but I wouldn't want to rely on it in isolation without some other layers.
The Rucksack was borrowed as my own two are in use by son in Oz and daughter in Lake District on DoE Gold expedition. I found it really easy to pack-the sleeping bag went in very easy, as did the tent, poles and othr kit. The pockets each side are voluminous and easy to get into. Shoulder straps were comfortable and the built-in rain cover was useful. The top compartment had good space for First Aid kit and other quick access items.

Hi George, ive got the same Rucksack and found it a great job, loads of pockets and compartments for storage, i thought i was missing something as there was plenty of room left after packing for an overnighter in the Mournes, i had been looking at osprey rucksacks but when i saw that at Lindseys in ballymoney for £80, i just couldnt pass it, other stores are selling it for £150!
