Just wondering would it be benefical to go to the Introduction on the 7th if you attend one of the NI Wild events?
-
On the intro to bushcraft on the 7th august we will be covering more than I will be doing alone on the NI Wild events as the whole crew should be there many hands and all that!
Gf
-
Coolio, sounds like I will be there then.
-
No Craic!! Just found out I have to be in Roscommon on the 9th of July so won't be able to attend... Think I'll be aiming to get up on sunday though if cash flow is cool, how will I find the location so I can organise transport?
-
Carnfunnock is just outside larne heading north towards Glenarm on the coastal road. Clearly sign posted.
Correct me if I'm wrong though.

Where are you coming from?
Once in Larne follow the signs for the A2 Coast Road; Carnfunnock is about 3 miles out of the town along the Coast Road.

If you want to avoid the £4.50 parking fee you can park in the bottom carpark outside of Carnfunnock. It is literally a 5 minute walk and that's where I'm parking ;D
It's basically on the right hand side beside the sea before you turn into Carnfunnock. I'd rather keep the £4.50 and have a short walk up :)

What another fun day ;D
Big thanks to Greyfox and the NI Bushcraft guys for an enjoyable day :)
No pics from me this time but I think the others have some.
Highly recommended to all; you don't need to be into survivalism or bushcraft to have a fun day.
Knives and fire; you really can't beat it :D
I'll be booking in for the August one as well ;D
-
And a big thanks to the NIBA guys from me too. A really enjoyable day.
My wishlist.........to know lots of people with hammocks so that I can enjoy theirs!!
-
Absolutely amazing day in Carnfunnock with the guys from NIBA. Really learnt a lot and it's given me a much greater appreciation of bushcraft. Your knowledge (and patience!) is inspiring, so a big thanks from myself and Kat. Hard to pick a favourite part of the day as it was all very interesting and great fun, but I have to say that getting fire from a bow and drill was extremely satisfying. Was also good to put some faces to forum names, and meet a few new people as well. Hope to see you all again soon :)
-
Folks it was pleasure to have you all along for the day. I must say it is great to be in the company of people who truly enjoy the outdoors! Im sure i speak for the NIBA as a whole when i say thanks for all your hard work and perserverence (especially Bowdrill Kat) for making the day what it was and i hope you all come back and see us again, thanks very much guys!
Greyfox
PS love to see any photos you have, and beware all you hammockers as you might just awaken some night and find Samm lying beside you!!
-
Why not mate give it a go if you need any help give me a shout!

Mora make excellent bushcraft knives. I believe Mr. Mears recommends these :)
You can spend serious cash on a knife but I think most swear by the Mora. I have the Mora 2000 and it is a great knife; it's the perfect size for most tasks. I'll regularly use it in the kitchen.
http://www.heinnie.com/Knives/Mora-Knives/c-1-92-304/
http://www.lakelandbushcraft.co.uk/acatalog/Mora_Knives.html
Doing bushcrafty stuff with a folding pocket knife can be a struggle :)
-
Yes Mora are a great knife, the knives you were using at the weekend were hultafors. They are as good as the basic mora knives hold a great edge and are easily sharpened. They also cost a lot less. It really depends what you are after. Knives are a real mine field my advice is don't listen to all the rubbish about different steels etc it in my opinion is for knife anoraks who like to sit and look at their knives rather than use them. I have 3 one I made which I use for most of my work, a mora 120 carving knife which is great as it is smaller and thinner for delivate carving work and a small CK lambs foot penknife which is great for pruning and trimming. I used a hultafors just like you guys were using but gave it away to someone who had no knife. Don't start out by spending too much get an inexpensive knife first and see how it works for you then u will be better placed when u decide to buy something more exotic pr make one of your own as to what shape width etc is best for you. Just my tuppence.
GF
-
I really like your knife GF; just wish I had the skills / equipment to make one :)
I could never justify an expensive knife I never use :o
I got my Mora 2000 in a swap for a Victorinox Cybertool; got most of my gear this way ;D
Think I'll pick up a Hultafors knife as a back up or loan knife :)
-
I would like to thank NIBA for yesterday. I was great to see the look on my wifes face when I came in smelling of camp fire. I really enjoyed metting you all and hope to again soon.
-
I think these are the Hultafors knives (http://www.greenmanbushcraft.co.uk/cutting-tools/hultafors-craftsman-bushcraft-knife.htm) GF is talking about? Will probably pick one up for Kat as I think she will be keen to make a hearth and bearing block to go with her new drill ;) My shopping list now has a DC4 whetstone and I need to pick up a leather strop :)
-
Darn Darn and double darn, looks like I missed a serious cool day, anyone want to through up a post on how to make a knife from a file, especially on heating and reshaping the file, thats if its not a trade secret now lol, maybe a few pics to help.
It seems like everyone learnt something completely new on the day. Must trade the wife in for a non shopping model :)
-
Yes green pete is the guy who taught a lot of people to make knives. Just remember to keep both bevels equal if u don't it makes the knife tough to sharpen and to cut with. Aim for a 20 to 25 degree bevel. Also clean the knife up well before you harden it but don't make the edge too fine as you risk setting fire to the thin metal in the hardening process and ruining your hard work.

I can second what Paul has said about a great day. It was a pleasure to welcome you all to Carnfunnock.
Hopefully we'll see lots of you again soon.
Here's a few pictured from the day's events.

there were a number of successes with the bow drill and embers blown to flame.

Kat showed great perseverance and finally succeeded in getting firstly an ember and then a fire.

Yeah just to second what paul and Gary have already said was great day and good to have some of the Ni wild guys there, makes a big difference when the people your working with love the outdoors as much as we do.
Hope we can do another day with you guys
-
Just another quick thanks to the NIBA guys for a very interesting and fab day! Great photos too! The souvenir drill piece will remind me to practice my fire lighting techniques :)
-
Been practising my feather sticks today ;D
Worked a treat and both lit with the firesteel; I must be getting better :D
Great pics CG :)
-
Been practising my feather sticks today ;D
I was doing exactly the same! Kat and I headed to Crawfordsburn and did a bit of tree identification and then picked up a nice big piece of dead wood which I cut up with the Laplander and then split with the Mora. Once they were split we practised our feather sticks which are definitely improving, although we didn't bother trying to light any of them just tried to get some nice curls :) We intended to nab a couple of caches in Crawfordsburn, but in the end time got the better of us and we had to head for home.
Great to see the photos Celt_Ginger, thanks for posting them! I had planned to take lots of photos on the day but I got so engrossed in the practical stuff my camera barely left its case!

There will also be an introduction to bushcraft on the 7th august this is bookable through Carnfunnock
is there a link to book this or who do i call? i'd like to bring a few scouts out to this one

Hopefully not £5 per person lol
-
Yes it is £5 per person. This is limited to 10 people. The cost isn't just for materials, we have had people book and not bother turning up to the events which has meant others who were interested couldn't go. It takes time to put these events together, and when we have a list of 20 people down to go on one and we set it up for that many and when only 5 turn up and noone bothers to cancel it's a waste of a lot of material and food. If we have no bookings on this 2 weeks before the event it will be cancelled, so get in and book early folks!
GF
-
To be fair £5 is an absolute bargain.
Not only are you are covering materials but the training. I'd be very comfortable building & starting a fire with one match, a firesteel even :)
We all had the opportunity to do this free; some were so greedy they went twice ;D
-
Ha ha! £5 per person, or you could go to the Woodsmoke introduction to bushcraft for £225 per person.
Some day one of these will be running on a date when I've not already got something else on.
-
For anyone interested I put together a blog post about our day in Carnfunnock with NIBA along with a few photographs:
http://www.jonpatterson.co.uk/2011/bushcraft-skills-day/
-
Hi Greyfox.
Sorry if my post seemed a bit out of focus ref : £5 per person, I was thinking of Liams post about bringing scouts along, more along the lines of a group discount for parties, boy/girl scouts groups etc, I myself would pay the £5 just to feather a stick and another £5 to light it lol.
The value of what you are giving is by far worth more than a £5 note, apologies to all concerned if my post sounded like I was a miserable old git :-[
-
Chris no probs mate, if anything you brought it to others attention. As they no advertising is bad advertising! ;)
GF
-
Only 10 places, oops id better get my finger out!!! :o
-
Kat and I have just booked on to the Introduction to Bushcraft day next weekend. Looking forward to it! Who all is going from here?
-
Me and a few scouts going too
-
Must be quite close to the cut-off number by now then? Is anyone going to give the Introduction to Geocaching a go the day before, or are y'all hardened 'cachers now? :)
-
I am involved in the Introduction To Geocaching on the Saturday ;D
We are 'releasing' a number of new caches in the park on the day; I've been charged with hiding a few in the back wood. If you have interest in geocaching you should pop along. It is basically an explanation of what geocaching is, how to do it and then getting out around the park and find them :) There will be a chance to see various types of GPS and meet some on the names you see on all these caches.
We are also having an Event Geocache after the Introduction To Geocaching. This is just a get together of cachers; you sign a logbook and it counts towards your cache count :) Sometimes they have giveaways and freebies for the kids.
http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=2b301408-9b42-400a-bdc3-600cb27cde9a
[A muggle is geocaching term for a non-geocacher. e.g. 'Be careful as there are a lot of muggles in the area :)']
I really need to get the finger out and get booked onto the Bushcraft day :o
