For all you who are as mad as me Bear's new series starts next Monday night on Discovery 21:00.
-
It started on monday past with him in the canadian rockies. It was a good show but with the bear you never know if its set up or real after the hotel scandal.
But still you have to give it to him he is good. But is he better than Ray?

Feck cant believe I missed the one monday past do you know when the repeat is

Is this going to turn into one of those threads where it's:

or even:

:D
Each to their own I guess, I enjoy watching both of them and have books by them as well but personally I prefer Ray (not just cause I met the guy, I'm sure Bear's a decent spud too) as he's got a different approach and doesn't sensationalise what he's doing. He's also been doing it a lot longer so has more authority in my book.
Having said that I would probably watch Bear's new series but don't have Sky unfortunately :-[

Do you have sky+? If you do just search Bear and it is pepeated loads on Discovery.
-
OMG just seen them pictures Paul, lol. But I do prefer the way of the bear.
They are completly different in there approch and that makes it a great difference.
-
Ray for me every time, bear grylls is more "hollywood" in his approach, and makes for entertaining tv, but not sure how good he would be if he couldnt "find" an old boat, rope, petrol cans etc "lying around" in the forest ::)
-
Not sure, I think that Bear would have more chance of getting you rescued. Where as Ray would probably be able to keep you sustained in a forest.
-
Repeat is on Saturday, set for record already
-
I agree Ray is the man.. Bear is a liability..

Yeah that is because Bear has a huge support team around him and you would be bound to get rescued..
-
ha ha, it's like comparing F1 and WRC. I like them both, but I think Ray's recent shows have been a bit samey.
Since the hotel 'scandal' Bear's been very careful to make it clear when he has support and when they help him out to save time.
You honestly think Ray doesn't have an equally competent support team?

Ray does have a support crew and they have been shown on camera many times, he makes no secret of it. However he definitely has the knowledge whereas Bear takes advice in the locations he's in.
-
why is Bear Grylls aways covered in muck. Even when he was in the snow he still managed to get covered in muck. Is spray on muck part of his survival kit? :)

I take it none of you have seen the video of the outtakes/near death experiences.

Think thats it. I havent seen all of it but from what I did see he has a lot of gut doing some of it.
Seen a video where they took a short cut through a train tunnel, about halfway down they heard the train coming at them. They had to run for their lives. The camera man fell mid way and bear ran back and picked him up and they had only just sprinted about 300 metres when they jumped out of the tunnels mouth and the freigh train whizzed passed and missed him by about a foot. '
Sorry haters, you just can t stage that.
-
You all know Bear is a native from this fair land?
He grew up in donagerdee (Can't spell :))
-
Bear is a legend, Uncle Ray is an overweight boy scout but still very good at what he does.
-
I don't think I've ever watched a full Ray Mears :-\
He clearly knows his bushcraft but for entertainment value it has to be Bear ;D
Comparing the two just isn't fair and by arguing it out on a forum makes everyone looks silly. It's like the Leatherman / Gerber or Victorinox / Wenger 'debates'. Nothing good comes from it; just be glad we get to choose :)
We love sitting down to watch Bear to see what he'll eat next. You would be foolish to think that it was literally him and a cameraman. I watched the Behind The Scenes episode. He has an ex Marine as his Rope Expert and another ex military as the overall Crew leader. Some of his stunts are really silly like back flipping into a pool of water or venturing down an abandoned mine. I'll not even talk about putting a tube up your bum :o
I've got all the Bear stuff on Sky+; I must watch his new one tonight ;D
I'm really fighting the urge to get the new Gerber / Bear Survival knife. Most of the reviews say it is a pile of poop and something Bear would never use but I'm still tempted :o Only $30 in the US; flippin £65 here >:(
-
See I'm tempted by the Ultimate Knife as well, although walking about the Mournes with a fixed blade does raise an eye brow or two.
-

Actually Bear is the scout! :D
-
President I think isn't he or something like that. For me however some of the best television I have watched in years has been between The Bear and Uncle Ray. If it was up to me they would be on more than Eastenders.

I think if anywhere that shouldn't be out of the ordinary but compulsory ;D
I really like his original Bayley S4 knife but then prices for it begin at £400+; that's if you can get one :o

He is the Cheif Scout :)
-
Watched Monday's episode on a desert island ;D [I wasn't on the desert island, he was :D]
First time I've seen him using a Gerber knife. It wasn't the Bear Grylls orange & black one. Think it is the Gerber LMF II which the Bear Grylls one is modelled on.

for protection against big cats of course ;)

I have just finished reading bears autobiography. I thoroughly enjoyed it and it has given me a much changed perspective about the man. I also met and got a lift from one of his close friends and school chum who was also involved in the Atlantic crossing. He was described to me as the guy who was always helping everyone else, if you were in trouble bear was always the one who came to help out no matter what it cost him. The incident with the hotel was blown out of proportion, his wife Shara and kids came to visit while he was filming an episode of man v wild and he went and spent the night with them at the hotel lodge they were staying in. The next day he was back out to staying in the muck and gutters. Who wouldn't have done the same. I have a lot of respect for the guy and it's obvious to see and the inside info confirms it his programmes are mainly for the dollar Market. Hopefully next time I'm in England I might get to meet the man himself.

Fair enough GF, Must have a look at getting his book, sounds like it could be an interesting read.

He is also on Graham Norton.. Just watching him now.
-
Watched last Monday's episode last night. The one where he is in Scotland :)
Used a seal skin as a nice wetsuit jumper; looked like a weird tank top :D
It's the first one where he uses his new Gerber Survival knife ;D

Weird I watched it last night aswell. And double weird I noticed that and thought to myself "I windered how long it would take him to use it".
-
In the last few episodes he was using a black Gerber LMF II or possibly Prodigy. Perhaps the Bear Grylls one wasn't available until this episode.
I think this series aired in the US in February so probably filmed last summer [ish]
The more I see this one the more I'll want it ::) Don't need it but that's never stopped me :D

Fair play that might take balls with some of his other stunts, however when adverage joe now thinks he can do the same someone is going to get killed from bad advice from some chav in karrimor.
-
To be fair the Bear Grylls show is not a camping show. It is not about let's go into the mountains and try to survive.
It is about when bad things happen and your life is on the line. If someone is stupid enough to cross a river with crocodiles or jump into an unknown pool of water then they deserve a Darwin Award (http://www.darwinawards.com/) :D
The most important thing is that this is a TV show. Made for TV and all that. Same as WWE wrestling, Eastenders and Bugs Bunny. And of course it is primarily aimed at the US market; don't hate the player, hate the game ;)
I really enjoy his shows. Some of it is laughable; like when he walked through the trees onto a runway and jumped on a plane :D I like the shelter building, fire lighting and making rafts, etc.
A fun show would be a bit or role reversal between Bear and Ray ;D Watching Ray skydive, climbing and peeing on everything whilst Bear tries his hand at some bushcraft could be fun :D

I would pay to see that :D
