Title: Desert Island Top 5 Items
Post by: LennyJ1 on June 08, 2011
Ignoring Boats, Helicopters, Jet Packs, Bear Grylls, Ray Mears & Sat phones

If you were stuck on a Desert Island and could have 5 items of gear, which are not to big in size, what would they be and why?

For me it would be:

Fire Steel: Kinda explains itself. FIRE!!!!!!! ;D
Ipod Touch: I know the sound of the waves crashing against the beach can be nice but it could send you mad so some tunes for the camp fire. On which there would be photos of family and friends as well.
Powermonkey Solar charger: to charge above
Knife: Single blade to make shelter and to aid in the catching of fish.
Metal Mug: To boil water and to aid in cooking food

Hmmm, will have to think about that one, but a pair of ice skates and a football are the 2 obvious ones  ;)

Most people think of what would keep you alive longest but you should really be thinking about what will get you rescued quickest, so small items like a mirror for signalling or a flare gun would be top priority.

Knife - For the usual, gutting fish, gutting anything really that needs gutting, making shelter, clothing, oh and keeping Nazi zombies at bay.
Fire Steel - Fire
P20 sun cream - I blister like a leper in a steam room
Latest issue of FHM or NUTS - Do I have to give a reason for this
1 cast iron pot for cooking

According to Dave out of Discovery's Dual Survival it is the five C's:

1 - Cutting Tool (Knife)
2 - Combustion Device (Lighter, matches)
3 - Cover (Something to sleep under)
4 - Container for water (explains itself)
5 - Cordage (Rope)

:D hahaha very good, sort of half way between Belfast and culchie accent so I'll go for Lisburn.

"Wilson! ... WILSON!"

As for stuff to bring not sure of full list but would like the travel tap bottle and straw. Was up the Mournes on Sat and made a lot of use out of both of them in various rivers I wouldn't normally drink out of. Haven't died yet so can recommend them!

It's hard to argue with that list. Only thing I'd add would be some sort of luxury but it would need to be something that would last the distance. An Ipod is awesome but it's unlikely to last too long. Question is, what single, non-powered item could you get the most joy out of for the longest time?

I just belive that cordage and cover would be supplied buy what you find, weather that be washed up stuff or natural from the land

Depends if you want to be rescued or not though... might be a really nice island ;D

Think the 5 C's Oisin posted is a pretty sensible list.  Think I would make the cutting tool something like a Leatherman with a few handy tools.  Firesteel for fire lighting (although I'm hardly stellar at lighting fires with one!).  Tarp for sleeping under and will swap the water container for hammock in the hope I can find a coconut to use as a water container or something ;)  Paracord sounds fair enough for the last item.  For entertainment I would have to fashion the infamous "cup and ball" toy using the aforementioned coconut, paracord and something scavenged resembling a ball :D
