Title: Getting out for some family fun
Post by: RedLeader on June 01, 2011
Hi all,

It's June, the weather's improving (hopefully) and we're into the best of the year for enjoying the outdoors. There has been a lot of chat about getting the kids out for some fun so I thought I'd throw up a thread to see what everyone thought and who would be interested. I'm not thinking of anything specific could be any activity at all and for a day, afternoon or overnight - whatever. Anything that gets the younger ones away from the Xbox and into the fresh air for a while!

Also, as ever, this isn't in any way restricted to people with kids, everyone is welcome but it would obviously be something family friendly.

Reply with thoughts.

Your trying to steal me away from my Xbox?  :D

NI Wild fun day? Lots of outdoor games, orrienteiring, backwoods cooking etc.

Just a few ideas.

I'd like to see a repeat of the Family Overnighter in Donard Wood :)

The pics look awesome. Could be a good intro for grown ups and kids alike ;D

I'm up for it, preferably a wee hike up a smallish mountain (with the option for the fitter ones to go further) some afternoon. Meeting up at Meelmore lodge would be good for families as they can use the facilities (i told you to go before we left the house  >:( ) so maybe a Hare's Gap hike with options of Bearnagh/Meelmore. If the weather is nice then a bbq at meelmore lodge. simples  :)

Don't get me wrong I do want to experience the Mournes including all the places you guys mentioned but are there other possibilities?  :)

Antrim Hills, Glens of Antrim? Guess where I'm from lol  :D

To be honest I've no issue travelling anywhere but would be keen to explore in my own 'backyard' as well if you know what I mean.

What about Glenarriff Forest Park, Isn't there a camping ground near there?
I've no weans, but I certainly can act like one.. even without drink lol.. I am also good at keeping them entertained.. So count me in for babysitting duties, team games etc.

I'll do another caving weekend, but not now...

Baby due in 4 weeks so I'm under house arrest at the minute...

There is a campsite there yes, pretty nice at that. Clean toilets and hot water. Not much more to ask for.

I've been working the last 9 months in Larne (but live in Lisburn)...been thinking about packing my overnight kit one Friday night and heading up north along the coast...not sure where...

Do it. The cliff walk is nice and easy even with kids and Grey Man's Path very cool:

There's a large wild camp site at the foot of the cliff, complete with rocks for anyone into sea fishing/kayaking and a river for fresh water....

Want to find somewhere along the coast with secure (ish) car parking. Thinking about parking Cushendun then going for a nosie along the coast past the tall apartments towards the cave...see if I can find a wee quiet spot.

That looks awesome. Can you camp at the top of Fair Head?

Only if you are careful. It's farming land with sheep and stuff and you can see Farmer Brown's house as you walk along the cliff edge so he'll be able to see you unless you are a bit crafty were you hide your tent.
