In ref. To some training I'm happy to offer my services to anyone who wants to learn some bushcraft skills before you have the survival night. I will be away on the 4th weekend am off to the bushcraft show in Cumbria. Let me know who's interested, I can run this in Carnfunnock for those who want to attend Sunday suits me best. Also what do people want to learn, eg fire shelter food etc.

Very generous offer Greyfox, I'd love to come along. Unfortunately if it's going to be over the next couple of weeks I won't be able to do a great deal with my gammy arm, but if no one particularly minded me avoiding getting my hands too dirty I think I could learn a lot by observation. Something like a Sunday afternoon would suit me well and I'd be particularly interested in learning more about shelter and fire. I think Kat would probably come along as well.

Sounds fun and very kind to offer (http://forum.multitool.org/Smileys/default/salute.gif)
I'd be up for that ;D
Do you guys do wild camping in the park right at the very top? That would be great (http://forum.multitool.org/Smileys/default/541.gif)
-
No probs whoever wants to come along will be more than welcome. Let's set a date! We use the park extensively and also because I live in Larne. Our main teaching area is wooded area beside the kids play park but I also have an area in the back wood. We have permission to use the whole park as we run courses for Carnfunnock. Put down some suggestions for a date in June most Sunday's are great except 25th.

I'd be interested too, I can't do sunday 19th :(
-
I'm in Larne too Greyfox so can do any dates at the minute :)
There's a geocache down where your main teaching area is. I'm surprised nobody has stumbled upon whilst attending a session.
-
I know where the geocache is and it's well hidden out of the way! Lol! We have had a few hunting for it but I never give any clues!

I'd love to come along to this Greyfox but it's unlikely as larne's a bit far away for me. :(
Just to add, I am first-aid qualified for the night we do this if that's any use (hopefully it won't be called into use though!)

In June I can only really do the 5th and the 12th. I'm away on holidays at the end of June, so wouldn't be available again until 10th July. That said, if it suits everyone else don't be worrying about working around my dates.
Whilst on the subject Greyfox, I see Larne BC have an event on their website entitled "Introduction to Bushcraft (http://www.larne.gov.uk/event_detail.asp?eventid=1323&area=4&text=1)". Is that being run by NIBA?

If you're going to that you may as well come the day before to the Introduction to Geocaching (http://www.larne.gov.uk/event_detail.asp?eventid=1322&area=6&text=1) ;) ;D
I'm helping organise this one with some of the guys from Geocaching Ireland (http://forums.geocachingireland.com/index.php)
Planning to stay that night and attend the Bushcraft worskhop the following morning; should be fun ;D
-
Any weekend suits me. Usually down in Larne anyway.
Weekday would suit too (in a few weeks after Tech is out for summer)

Yes SM NIBA are running that event, the booking is taken through Carnfunnock so don't know how many are coming yet.

Hi folks, it's looking like Sunday 19th June for the NI Wild bushcraft day at Carnfunnock. Those that are interested and can make it on this date stick your name down and also give me an idea of what u would like to cover. Admin I hope it is ok to do this if not no problemo just remove it bud.
GF

Is that the day after Iplod?
-
Yeah it seems to be mate, does that pose a problem for everyone?
GF

Sounds good to me, you can pencil me and Kat in for the 10th July :)
-
Me and Grace are planning on the 10th of July. Will this be our overnighter?
I'd like to learn:
-How to start a fire from scratch
-How to make some form of a shelter
-Edible plants in the area
-
I'm a bit concerned that I have hijacked red leaders thread. I don't think this is the overnighter he had in mind I'm happy to help out though. I wonder could the admin start 2 lists one for those interested in the 19th June and those interested in 10th July for a day of bushcraft training. I can show you what I know though it helps to plan the day better if we tailor it to what people want to learn. Oisin has started it off with fire, shelter and wild food. Is everyone happy with those 3 topics?

Split the topic just to save any confusion as requested, put this one down as a "Bushcraft Skills Day" if that's okay?
I'm all good to go with Oisin's three topics - fire, shelter and food sounds like a good place to start!
-
Thanks for doing this SM, ok folks Fire Shelter and food it is then. Put your name down if you are interested.
GF
-
I'm good for the 10th July.

I'd love to do this but between the Plod and hols nether dates suit me. Maybe we can sort another later in the summer.
-
I'm gonna try for the 10th Greyfox but do you know if there is a charge for it?

Would be good if you could make it on 10th Paul72, this is a freebie from me no charge though you may have to pay for parking if you bring your vehicle into the park.

Hey! Yes I will be up for improving my bush craft skills! Well, when I say improving...more like gaining! Can't say I'm much good other than the old Girl Guide stuff :) Will be nice to have some female company on a NIW outing!
-
Ok Folks, getting a good response so far the list is as follows if you want to go add your name,

10th July 2011

I'm up for both dates; being local and all that ;D If the numbers warrant two dates of course :)
To save cash you can park in the car park outside Carnfunnock and walk up ;D That's what I'll be doing ;)
Firemaking will be great but not just from scratch. I'd like to learn how to start a fire with firesteel. I can never get it going :-\ Using hand sanitiser or Vaseline soaked cotton balls is a bit like cheating.
Knowing what is good tinder and the different burning properties of different wood would be useful.

10th July 2011
Grace

Fantastic idea thanks for organising! Heading on a canoe trip around Varmland on the 21st so thisll be great experience!
Would also love to know burning properties of different woods and maybe some simple pot hangers or camp crafts? Want to carve a kuksa before I head off so if anyone has any experience with this gimmie a shout!
Thanks again Greyfox, really looking forward to it!

Hi folks great to see so many names, I'm up for both dates no problem. Just back from the bushcraft show met some real interesting characters including the great lofty wiseman, he may be getting on but he is such a nice guy with an incredible amount of knowledge a real gent. Keep the names. Coming folks these will be on no matter what the weather is like, fire lighting is as much fun in the rain and is much more rewarding.
Looking forward to meeting you all.

Literally in the door from our Bushcraft Day ;D
Really enjoyable even when the heavens opened shortly after lunch. It did help with putting the fire out though :)
Got some good pics that I'll post later. Can't wait for the July one; highly recommended :)
-
Agreed! Great day, thanks again Paul! Will get a fire going with a bow drill if its the end of me!

All was going well until it hit the damp tinder :( Lesson learnt; keep your tinder dry especially when it rains ::)

Guys thanks very much for turning up today it was nice to meet you all Peter, Rachel Michael and Dan. Well done young Michael perseverance always pays off and you can feel confident In the fact that you lit a fire containing nothing but what you gathered from the wild with a firesteel and nothing else, there are a lot of people who call themselves bushcrafters who can't say the same! I had a great day thanks to your company and putting up with my incessant whinning about knife safety and grading kindling I'm an anorak I know. ;D I'm looking forward to the next one. Great pictures by the way Dan!
